  • Japanese Operations in New Guinea

    L Evelyn Cheesman•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1943

JAPAN struck very swiftly in the Pacific, with great force and in many different directions at once; when she had occupied the Netherlands Indies she stretched out farther to the south and attacked New Guinea: according to plan. As is well known, preparations for this Pacific war had been in progress for over twenty years. Japanese fishermen, pearl-fishers and shell-fishers, have thoroughly surveyed the coasts of Pacific islands, taking soundings…

  • The Mountainous Country at the Boundary, North New Guinea

    L Evelyn Cheesman•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1941

FROM Manokwari in Dutch New Guinea there is only one recognized route to England, namely, by local steamer to Makassar, thence to Batavia, from which is regular steamer service with Europe. There is an alternative, though too unconventional to be even considered by officials: that is, to go east from Manokwari to Humboldt Bay, over the Dutch boundary into the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, by steamer from Wewak to Sydney and so to England. The…

  • Two Unexplored Islands off Dutch New Guinea

    L Evelyn Cheesman•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1940

MY recent collecting expedition in New Guinea lasted from February 1938 to June 1939, a year of which was spent on two islands off the Dutch territory to collect insects, mammals, ferns, etc, for the British Museum (Natural History). Afterwards I crossed the boundary into the Mandated Territory, and collected insects only in the Torricelli mountains and the foothills of the Bewani mountains on behalf of the South Australian Museum

  • The Cyclops Mountains of Dutch New Guinea

    L Evelyn Cheesman•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1938•Cited by: 2

THE Papuan insect fauna, which is very distinct and very rich in forms, extends outside the island of New Guinea to adjacent islands and to tropical Queensland. By some means it has spread in a south-easterly direction as well, through the Solomon Islands and the New Hebrides as far as the Society Islands in the mid-Pacific. For the last ten years my work has been to follow this Papuan element in the Pacific islands back to the land of its origin…

  • The Island of Malekula, New Hebrides

    L Evelyn Cheesman•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1933

TN 1927, while working out a collection of insects in the Natural History JMuseum, which I had made on the Society Islands and Marquesas Islands during the St. George Expedition, I discovered that there was very little entomological material from the New Hebrides in our national collection. We needed this material to link up our knowledge of the insect fauna of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands with that of Australia and the groups of the South …
