  • A coach in all but name

Dawn Day, Margaret Roberts•ARTICLE•Sport in History•2025

  • Public history and the British Society of Sports History

Open Access•Katie Taylor, Fiona Skillen et al.•ARTICLE•Sport in History•2022

This article explores the importance of sports history societies sharing their research with a broader audience. It draws on our own experiences and highlights examples of the work done by other British Society of Sports History members to disseminate their research through ‘traditional’ methods such as films, radio, and exhibitions and digital means, for example, Playing Pasts. However, the paper's aim is not simply self-congratulatory; it also …

  • Swimming beyond the Metropolis

Open Access•Dawn Day, Dave Day et al.•ARTICLE•Midland History•2021

Throughout the Victorian era, the availability of facilities and prevailing social attitudes were important influences on the swimming landscape. Middle-class concerns about the working classes led to the creation of municipal swimming baths following Acts of Parliament in 1846 and 1878 and these became hubs for the development of local swimming communities incorporating teachers, baths staff and users. Previously, swimming had been dependent on …

  • Determinants of PhD student satisfaction

Gerard Dericks, Edmund R Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Assessment & Evaluation in Higher…•2019

Understanding the determinants of PhD student satisfaction is likely to become increasingly vital for universities as student satisfaction rankings already ubiquitous at undergraduate and master degree levels extend more broadly to the PhD level. Moreover, as PhD student populations and university competition become increasingly transnational, there is a growing need to understand cross-nationally common determinants of satisfaction. Building on …

  • From Butlins to Europe

    Dawn Day, Margaret Roberts•ARTICLE•Sport in History•2019•References: 5

Emerging out of the shadows cast over women’s football following its marginalisation by the Football Association in the inter-war years, Fodens Ladies, formed at a lorry manufacturing plant in Sandbach, Cheshire, contributed to a new vibrancy in the game between 1960 and 1980. Emulating many similar works-based predecessors, the team established itself as one of the pioneers of a female football revival and provided a public arena for several pro…

  • What Makes Foreign Policy Teams Tick

Michael Horowitz, Michael C Horowitz et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Politics•2019•Cited by: 8•References: 11

When do groups—be they countries, administrations, or other organizations—more or less accurately understand the world around them and assess political choices? Some argue that group decision-making processes often fail due to biases induced by groupthink. Others argue that groups, by aggregating knowledge, are better at analyzing the foreign policy world. To advance knowledge about the intersection of politics and group decision making, this pap…

  • Censored

Miguel E Roberts, Margaret E Roberts et al.•BOOK•Censored•2018

A groundbreaking and surprising look at contemporary censorship in ChinaAs authoritarian governments around the world develop sophisticated technologies for controlling information, many observers have predicted that these controls would be ineffective because they are easily thwarted and evaded by savvy Internet users. In Censored, Margaret Roberts demonstrates that even censorship that is easy to circumvent can still be enormously effective. Ta…

  • Organic Public Geographies

Open Access•Harriet Hawkins, Shelley Sacks et al.•ARTICLE•Antipode•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 15

A new field of “public geographies” is taking shape (Fuller 2008) in geography's mainstream journals. While much is “traditional”, with intellectuals disseminating academic research via non- academic outlets (Castree 2006; Mitchell 2008; Oslender 2007), less visible is the “organic” work and its “more involved intellectualizing, pursued through working with area-based or single-interest groups, in which the process itself may be the outcome” (War…

  • Reasons for Relinquishment and Return of Domestic Cats (Felis Silvestris Catus) to Rescue Shelters in the UK

Rachel A Casey, Sylvia Vandenbussche et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 12

Significant numbers of cats enter rescue and re-homing facilities each year, over half of which are relinquished directly by owners. Identifying the reasons why owners decide to give up their pet is an important step in the development of education strategies to encourage retention of cats by their owners. In addition, identifying why adopting owners fail to retain their new cats is important in the refinement of homing policies. Characteristics …

  • Bending, but not breaking

    Margaret Roberts•ARTICLE•Planning Practice and Research•1988

  • "Whose are yours?"

    Open Access•Margaret Roberts•ARTICLE•First Language•1980

This article focusses on the importance of the attitude of the adult(s) in terms of early language development at the pre-school stage. The adult's ability to create a reciprocal, on-going relation ship between himself and a child, a bond of trust based on a sense of mutuality through the spoken word, conveys to the child a sense of what positive human relationships are about. He in turn makes his unique contribution to the relationship as in the…
