  • Monitoring and Mitigation of Volcano Hazards

    D K Chester, R Scarpa et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1998

  • Holocene alluviation in the Algarve, southern Portugal: The case for an anthropogenic cause

    Open Access•D K Chester, David Chester et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1991•Cited by: 5•References: 10

  • Volcanism in Italy: The Hazard Implications of Hydromagmatic Eruptions

    Andrew Duncan, A M Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•1986•References: 1

There are several active volcanoes in Italy and during historic times these have given rise to a variety of different kinds of eruption. Hydromagmatism is one kind of volcanism which poses a particular threat in Italy. Hydromagmatism results from the interaction between magma and an external source of water, which can transform relatively mild volcanism into violent explosive events. Pyroclastic surges, blasts of gas and pyroclastic material that…

  • Mount Etna Volcano: Environmental Impact and Problems of Volcanic Prediction

    Andrew Duncan, A M Duncan et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1981•Cited by: 8•References: 2

Mount Etna, the largest continental volcano in the world, has a substantial environ? mental impact on the local area. Indeed, the Etna region is one of the most prosperous and densely populated parts of Sicily. This derives in large measure from the ample water supply from the porous lavas and the fertile volcanic soils. Nowhere on the slopes of the volcano, however, is free from the risk of damage by eruptive activity. The volcanic hazard, which…
