Towards integrated modeling of the long-term impacts of oil spills
Three emergencies of climate change
Climate challenge brings three, not just one, emergencies. These are the visible, conceptual and existential, all of which are urgent and important. The three emergencies are starkly highlighted in Louisiana, where historical coastal development and climate-induced sea level rise is causing visible emergencies in the form of extensive land loss and increased impacts of flooding and storm surges, leading to forced relocation of settlements. The vi…
Environmental Change and Potential Impacts
"Appropriate management requires information that can be gained only through applied research. We provide a brief history of applied research on the North Slope, introduce the North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) as an organization tasked with improving the coordination of science across the region, and posit applied science priorities that are essential for successful and informed management."
Coastal Ecosystem-Based Management with Nonlinear Ecological Functions and Values
A common assumption is that ecosystem services respond linearly to changes in habitat size. This assumption leads frequently to an “all or none” choice of either preserving coastal habitats or converting them to human use. However, our survey of wave attenuation data from field studies of mangroves, salt marshes, seagrass beds, nearshore coral reefs, and sand dunes reveals that these relationships are rarely linear. By incorporating nonlinear wav…

Earthquakes, Rivers and Ice
The Laguna San Rafael, Aisen Province, southern Chile, is a tidal lagoon which receives the San Rafael glacier?the nearest tidewater glacier to the equator. The glacier is sustained by very high precipitation and pronounced topographic relief on the tectonically active western Andean margin. This area formed the focus for three research projects undertaken as part of an expedition mounted by Operation Raleigh in early 1986: investigating and dati…
