  • An update on Pleistocene tortoise tracks on South Africa’s Cape south coast

    Open Access•Charles W Helm, Andrew S Carr et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Four new Pleistocene track-bearing aeolianite surfaces have been identified on South Africa’s Cape south coast, each portraying evidence of tortoise tracks. Together, they add to and buttress previous reports of tortoise tracks and trackways from the region. Globally, this remains the only area from which fossilized tortoise tracks have been recorded, and for the first time we illustrate the preservation of typical tortoise trackway morphology (i…

  • A Pleistocene hyenid trackway from the Cape south coast of South Africa

    Open Access•Charles W Helm, Hayley Cawthra et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2025

The global record of fossil hyenid tracks is sparse—the only formal reports that can be considered reliable are of trackways from Tanzania and a single track from Greece. However, trackway and track patterns of the four extant members of the Hyaenidae are distinctive among the tracks of carnivorans. A Pleistocene trackway comprising five manus–pes pairs has been identified on an aeolianite surface on the Cape south coast of South Africa, and is a…

  • A Review of Age Determinations on Pleistocene Corals in Eastern Australia

    Open Access•J W Pickett, T L Ku et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1989

Samples of corals from all three previously reported Pleistocene localities in eastern Australia have been dated anew using the 230 Th/ 234 U technique. Results for two sites are confirmed, but the new results for the third site are older than previously reported and do not support a high sea level for isotope substage 5c. All sites are now referred to substage 5e.

  • Evidence of High Sea Level during Isotope Stage 5c in Queensland, Australia

    Open Access•J W Pickett, C H Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Thirty-nine species of scleractinian corals have been recovered from under a high dune on the western (mainland) side of North Stradbroke Island, eastern Australia. The corals are associated with thin intertidal sediments and their good condition implies burial in situ and preservation in a saturated zone. Most likely this occurred as the coast prograded and a large dune advanced into the littoral zone, burying intertidal sediments and coral. The…
