Tell Me Something I Don’t Already Know: Informedness and the Impact of Information Programs
We document how imperfect information generates heterogeneous effects in information treatments with personalized high-frequency feedback and peer comparisons. In our field experiment in retail electricity, we find that high- and low-energy users symmetrically underestimate and overestimate their relative energy use pretreatment. Responses to personalized feedback, however, are asymmetric. Households that overestimate their relative use and low u…
Treating People Like Pollution: Homelessness and Environmental Injustice
Achieving environmental justice does not only require the provision of clean air and water in all the places where people carry out their lives, it also necessitates access to the very spaces of the urban environment. Through our research based on interview and archival data in a small U.S. city, we demonstrate that homeless persons are often viewed as a kind of environmental contaminant that should be cleaned up or kept out, either through the p…
Good Deals for Homebuyers, Not for the Poor: Erasing Poverty from Affordable Housing Discourse
The usage of the term affordable housing has changed over time, from meeting the housing needs of the poor, to the relatively unproblematized workings of the home ownership market. Qualitative analysis of media discourse in the Boise, Idaho, metropolitan area, from 1990 to 2009 demonstrates this shift in meaning. The changing construction of affordable housing in the media reifies the importance of homeownership as a primary tenure status and fur…

Boredom, Drugs, and Schools: Protecting Children in Gentrifying Communities
Gentrification beings a host of economic and social changes. Changes in community culture do not directly impact residents’ livelihoods or homes, but these differences in lifestyles shape peoples’ experiences of their homes. I examine rhetoric in three gentrifying neighborhoods in Atlanta, GA to see how it expresses both the uncertainty that new and long–time residents feel about their communities, and how it is indicative of boundary–work reside…
Adult Social Capital and Track Placement of Ethnic Groups in Germany
The dictum that “context matters” notwithstanding, few researchers have focused on how social capital affects educational outcomes for ethnic groups outside of the United States. Using German Socioeconomic Panel (GSOEP) data, analyses highlight the group‐specific effects of parental social capital on track placement among 11–16‐year‐old German and non‐German students. For both groups, parents’ family ties fail to affect track placement. Parents’ …
Fighting for Control: Political Displacement in Atlanta's Gentrifying Neighborhoods
The loss of political influence is an important adverse consequence of gentrification for long-time residents. This study examines why neighborhood organizations in three gentrifying neighborhoods in Atlanta, Georgia, chose to address this potential problem, while organizations in another gentrifying community did not. Organizations of long-time residents, whether formed before gentrification or in response to it, were more likely to address poli…
A methodology for incorporating natural catastrophes into macroeconomic projections
This paper addresses a critical problem in macroeconomic planning for natural disaster losses: how to incorporate potential future losses into current planning activity. The authors develop a technique to integrate probabilistic natural hazard losses into macroeconomic planning models. Probabilistic losses to capital stock (direct losses) serve as input to a macroeconomic model, which consequently calculates the macroeconomic impacts. The macroec…
