  • Long distance trade of copper ingots from the eastern Copperbelt (Democratic Republic of Congo) to central Malawi

Open Access•Jay Stephens, Virginie Renson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

In 1967 a hoard of eight X-shaped copper ingots was discovered in the village of Chombe, in central Malawi. These are all of the HXR ingot type, of which several hundred examples have been found in Zambia and Zimbabwe. They are thought to have been manufactured between the 14th and late 18th centuries CE. In 2024 we sampled five of the Chombe ingots to analyze for lead isotope analysis (LIA) and bulk ICP-MS chemical analysis at the University of …

  • Detailed Recovery Methods Show the Complexity of Ancient Mortuary Practices in Later Stone Age Hunter-Gatherers of Southern-Central Africa

    Jessica Cerezo-Román, Jessica I Cerezo-Román et al.•ARTICLE•Bioarchaeology International•2025

This article examines mortuary practices by terminal Pleistocene and Holocene hunter-gatherers from Malawi and eastern Zambia in southern-central Africa, with a focus on the evidence for secondary burial and postmortem body manipulation over the past ~16,000 years. Published regional archaeological literature documents widespread but variable reports of incomplete or isolated remains from these contexts. While pre-burial body exposure, post-buria…

  • Taphonomic considerations for identifying ochre residues on ostrich eggshell

    Open Access•Hannah M Keller, Ellery Frahm et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•References: 6

  • Short-distance hunting strategies of Late Quaternary foragers in the miombo woodlands of Malawi

    Open Access•A Bertacchi, Potiphar Kaliba et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 89

A record of forager hunting since the Last Glacial Maximum in Malawi. • Mostly small and medium prey not far from the site. • Focus on the procurement of bone marrow. • Evidence suggests a home-range system with limited mobility. The Economic Defendability Model posits that foragers exploiting dense and predictable resources should establish defended territories, while foragers exploiting unpredictable resources manage shortfall risk by ranging a…

  • Palaeoenvironmental data indicate late quaternary anthropogenic impacts on vegetation and landscapes in Mzimba, northern Malawi

    Open Access•David K Wright, Sarah J Ivory et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Environmental…•2024

Landscapes are formed by long-term interactions between the underlying geology and climatic, edaphic and biotic factors, including human activity. The Kasitu Valley in the Mzimba District of northern Malawi includes the Kasitu River and its adjacent floodplains and uplands, and it has been a location of sustained human occupation since at least 16 thousand years ago (ka) based on archaeological excavations from rockshelters. We trace the changing…

  • European Trade in Malawi: The Glass Bead Evidence

    Open Access•L Dussubieux, Menno Welling et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 30

  • Approaches to land snail shell bead manufacture in the Early Holocene of Malawi

    Open Access•J M Miller, Hannah M Keller et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•Cited by: 13•References: 33

Shell disc beads are important archeological indicators of social communication and exchange networks. There has been substantial research on ostrich eggshell (OES) beads, but little is known about the manufacture or chronology of similar beads from land snail shells (LSS). LSS beads are associated with Holocene hunter-gatherers in Africa, though direct dates are limited to the Iron Age, and there are no images or descriptions of the manufacturin…
