Social work contact in a UK cohort study
There is potentially a high degree of underreporting of social work contact in social surveys and cohort studies. Researchers should adopt methods to account for this issue in the future. The risk of emotional and behavioural problems is greater among children whose mothers have had contact with social workers compared to other children with seemingly similar adversities
The Improving Global Health fellowship
BACKGROUND: The importance of leadership development in the early stages of careers in the NHS has been highlighted in recent years and many programmes have been implemented which seek to develop leadership skills in healthcare professionals. The Improving Global Health (IGH) Fellowship scheme is one such programme, it provides a unique leadership development opportunity through an overseas placement with a focus on quality improvement work. This…

The Role of the Great Powers in the United Nations System
The world into which the United Nations was born twenty-five years ago was a world divided, almost as summarily as Caesar's Gaul, into three parts. Never had there been seen such a picture of the domination of virtually the whole globe by a few great powers. To mark the distribution of real power at the end of World War n, you needed only three flags. If you then travelled round the northern part of the globe, from the central European dividing l…

The Unknown United Nations
Doctors in old China according to one of those legends that are too good to be untrue were paid only while their patients remained healthy. This may not be a practical way of financing socialized medicine in modern societies. But I am sometimes tempted to dream of applying the principle to certain political institutions; both national and international. Take the United Nations. Its present unsophisticated budgetary arrangements mean that U.N. cos…
Ireland and the Washington Declaration
The hollow hypocrisy and sham democratic phraseology of the Churchill-Eisenhower Washington Declaration has, of course, been brutally exposed to the world by the events in Guatemala. But Ireland too, though far from being under the influence of Communists, has challenged the sincerity of this Declaration. Clause Three (which contains the words, "In the case of nations divided against their will we shall seek to achieve unity through free election…
Nationalism and Labor in Ireland, Part I
On the Easter of 1916 the Irish Republican organizations (the Irish Volunteers, the Irish Republican Brotherhood, and the proletarian Irish Citizen Army), adhering to the extreme Nationalist doctrine that "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity," raised an armed rebellion and from their headquarters in the General Post Office, Dublin, issued the proclamation of the Irish Republic. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website…
Nationalism and Labor in Ireland, Part II
When James Connolly was executed by a British firing squad after the 1916 Rebellion, the Irish working class lost its most competent and courageous leader. No one of equal stature has yet arisen in the Irish labor movement to take his place as leader and theorist. Connolly was forty-six when he died, but for most of his adult life he had labored in the building of an Irish socialist and trade-union movement which he hoped would be guided by the t…
