Contributions to Fraser's Magazine for Town and Country
In the final years of James Hogg’s life, Fraser’s Magazine for Town and Country became the most important outlet for his shorter writings, usurping the previous centrality of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine . This volume collects for the first time his many and various contributions to the magazine and presents them in a reliable scholarly form, complete with a wide-ranging introduction, explanatory notes, appendices and glossary. Building on othe…
Creating area level indices of behaviours impacting cancer in Australia with a Bayesian generalised shared component model
This study develops a model-based index approach called the Generalised Shared Component Model (GSCM) by drawing on the large field of factor models. The proposed fully Bayesian approach accommodates heteroscedastic model error, multiple shared factors and flexible spatial priors. Moreover, unlike previous index approaches, our model provides indices with uncertainty. Focusing on unhealthy behaviors that increase the risk of cancer, the proposed …
Fascism Can Only Grow in Secrecy
Studies of post-war anti-fascism in Australia have recently generated new insights into the continuities and transformations of post-war fascist and anti-fascist organisations. However, despite this upsurge in scholarship, the 1960s remain neglected. This article revises this absence through a case study of the Committee for the Restoration of Democracy in Greece (CRDG), the Yugoslav Settlers' Organisation (YSA), and its successor, The Committee …
Small-world networks and synchronisation in an agent-based model of civil violence
The rapid evolution and current ubiquity of social media as a form of communication calls for a revision of many models of collective behaviour. In this paper, we modify a classic agent-based model of civil violence by Epstein (2002) consisting of citizen and law-enforcement agents by integrating a Watts-Strogatz small-world network (SWN). The SWN simulates non-local connections between citizens, enabling influence by both local and distant neigh…

The Three Perils of Man
This is one of Hogg's longest and also one of his most original and daring works. Gillian Hughes's uncovering of the original manuscript in the Fales Library of New York University in August 2001 allows the editors to produce here a text that reflects Hogg's original intentions. Alongside the two main plots (the supernatural located at Aikwood Castle and the chivalric located at Roxburgh Castle) a series of embedded narratives provides the reader…

Abuse and Protection Issues across the Lifespan
The literature is reviewed: (a) comparing models of abuse and protection applied at each stage of the lifespan; and (b) exploring abuse and protection issues with respect to individuals over time. A paucity of comparative and lifespan work in the field of abuse and protection is reported. Within the available literature, different types of knowledge are drawn upon and contrasted definitions of ‘abuse’ and ‘protection’ employed. Accordingly, the m…
Zambia Then And Now
Written by a member of the last generation of British Colonial Service Officers in Africa, the book seeks to place both colonial rulers and their African successors in the context of history and the circumstances of their time, viewing their achievements and failures critically but not unsympathetically and comparing colonial society with that of the independent African country that Northern Rhodesia has become. Colonialism is viewed at the day t…

Evaluation of the Work-Place Cooperative Project in Geography Degrees at the University of Leeds
This paper describes the context and objective of a Work-Place Cooperative Project (WPCP) established in the School of Geography at the University of Leeds in 1995. The project, in part a response to the changing graduate and employment market in the early 1990s, presents students with issues with a geographical dimension from business, commerce, industry and environmental research. A number of examples from the WPCP are presented

Stimulus Generalization Following Extra‐dimensional Training in Educationally Subnormal (Severely) Children
The use of discrimination learning paradigms in the study of attentional transfer is discussed. The technique of go/no‐go discrimination learning followed by stimulus generalization testing is contrasted with the more familiar simultaneous learning paradigm followed by a shift in the relevant cues. In the former paradigm the effect of training a discrimination on one dimension on the slope of the stimulus generalization gradient on an independent…
Dimensions and determinants of judgements of colour samples and a simulated interior space by architects and non‐architects
Architects and non‐architects made Semantic Differential ratings of colour samples (chips) and a simulated interior space (a model). In analyses of total samples’ ratings (architects and non‐architects) of (a) colour chips and (b) models, and individual sample analyses, (c) architects’ chip judgements, (d) architects’ model judgements, (e) non‐architects’ chip judgements, and (f) non‐architects’ model judgements, five factors occurred, though not…

A graduates and employers database system as a strategic resource for geography departments
With greater competition in the mass higher education market in the UK, each institution will have to stimulate and promote greater interaction between itself and the world outside if it is to compete successfully. Presently, such interaction occurs for a variety of reasons, at many different levels and over different time scales. This paper proposes an approach to fostering greater interaction at departmental level through a network of former gr…

Anecdotes of Scott
GBS_insertPreviewButtonPopup('ISBN:9780748620852); James Hogg knew Sir Walter Scott well, and after Scott's death in 1832 he wrote an affectionate but frank account of their long friendship. Hogg arranged for his manuscript to be sent to John Gibson Lockhart, Scott's son-in-law and official biographer; but when Lockhart read the manuscript he declared himself to be filled with 'utter disgust and loathing' at the 'beastly and abominable things' he…
