  • What’s the point in even trying? Women’s perception of glass ceiling drains hope

Bahar Javadizadeh, John A Ro et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Social Psychology•2024

In this study, we focus on glass ceiling perceptions, characterized by women's subjective feelings about their ability to move upward in their organization. Drawing on social information processing and hope theory, we propose that glass ceiling perceptions decrease women's citizenship behaviors and increase their turnover intentions by draining their hope in the workplace. Moreover, we suggest that the strength of the association between glass ce…

Then, the world’s attention was riveted to the US’s ignominious exit from Afghanistan. • What the 100th Anniversary of the CPC Means for Humanity

John Ro, John Ross•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2021

The CPC’s 100th anniversary is not only of significance for China. The CPC, since the creation of the People’s Republic of China, has led the greatest improvement in the conditions of the largest number of people, and the greatest proportion of humanity, in any country in history. In just over 70 years China has gone from almost the world’s poorest country, as measured by per capita GDP, to the brink of a high-income economy by World Bank classif…

  • Reflections on the Hong Kong Riot and the Disintegration of the Soviet Union: Interview with John Ross

John Ro, John Ross et al.•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2019

The simultaneous combination of provocations by rioters in Hong Kong, the trade aggression against China by the United States (US), an international propaganda campaign of lying about China’s anti-terrorist policies in Xinjiang, and sales of US weapons to the Taiwan region shows the type of “hybrid war” being waged by the US to try to block China’s national development. In this interview, John Ross, former Director of Economic and Business Policy…

  • Piketty and Marx's Rising Organic Composition of Capital: Review of Capital in the Twenty-First Century by Thomas Piketty

    John Ro, John Ross•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2015•References: 1

Piketty's Capital in the Twenty-First Century is a factual masterpiece, carrying out an extremely important task in establishing beyond doubt the rapid increase in global and national inequality in the last three decades. But Piketty's own theoretical framework cannot adequately explain his factual findings. In fact, Piketty's findings are easily accounted for by Marx's analysis of the rise in the organic composition of capital—that is, the incre…

An important feature of civil-military relations is the way in which states recognize the sacrifices that the men and women of the armed forces give to their country and provide care and support for them and their families once they leave the military as veterans. Yet states differ not only in the levels and kinds of support provided for ex-service personnel but also in their very definition of what a veteran is. This article examines the case of…

  • The Firre Act and Housing for Low-Income Families

John Ro•ARTICLE•Publius The Journal of Federalism•1990

During the 1980s, federal government real, direct expenditures for low-income housing increased modestly, budget authority for future housing spending fell dramatically, and subsidies shifted from primarily construction to tenant aid. These changes reflect the delicate balance struck between Reagan's “decentralized federalism” as it applied to low-income housing and the much more pro-active, centralized positions often advocated by the Congress. …
