  • Do No Harm

    Open Access•Travis B Ruddle, Travis Ruddle et al.•ARTICLE•Public Administration Review•2025•References: 10

Do no harm (DNH) represents a foundational moral framework for public administration ethics. Prohibitive moral principles, rather than aspirational values, provide a more coherent and operational basis for ethical public service—even when confronting demands for proactive intervention. Bernard Gert's theory of common morality reveals how rationality and impartiality underpin moral rules designed to prevent fundamental harms, while acknowledging c…

  • Coordinated river infrastructure decisions improve net social-ecological benefits

Open Access•Samuel G Roy, Adam Daigneault et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

We explore the social, ecological, economic, and technical dimensions of sustainable river infrastructure development and the potential benefits of coordinating decisions such as dam removal and stream crossing improvement. Dam removal is common practice for restoring river habitat connectivity and ecosystem health. However, stream crossings such as culverts are often 15 times more abundant than dams and may pose similar ecological impacts. Using…

  • The Stress of Russian Nouns in -ик and -ица

    Open Access•David K Hart, David Hart•ARTICLE•Poljarnyj vestnik•2015

This article presents a computational basis for a default position of stress in Russian nouns with the final sequence -ик or -иц(a) and their variants (e.g. the suffixes -ник, -овица, etc.). The position of stress in all such words is classified as root, stem, or final (desinential) and tallied. The results of the examination suggest that stress in Russian derived nouns functions to define the boundary between the root and suffix. The presence of…

The ‘club versus country’ debate, which refers to an individual’s allegiance to their respective club and national teams, has become an increasingly popular topic for debate in the context of English football. Whilst prior work in this area has focused on the tensions between club officials and national associations, this study investigated the attitudinal and behavioural loyalty of fans towards club and national teams. • Creating a Place for Environmental Communication Research in Sustainability Science

    Laura A Lindenfeld, Damon M Hall et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2012

Environmental communication scholarship is critical to the success of sustainability science. This essay outlines three pressing areas of intersection between the two fields. This article describes the evolution of IBM's effort to manage its relationships with the U.S. government from the time that Thomas Watson, Jr. became CEO. While the Watson family controlled the firm, the family members served as the main bridges between IBM and the government. This personalized approach began to give way in the 1960s, as the intensity and scope of pressure from the firm's political environment grew beyond the capability of any i…

Bronwyn Norton Peirce, Merrill Swain et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Linguistics•1993

This article compares the self-assessments of French proficiency made by approximately 500 Grade 8 students in two different French immersion programs (‘early’ and ‘middle’) in Toronto, Canada. Two self-assessment benchmarks are used: the perceived language proficiency of francophone peers and the difficulty represented by specific everyday tasks in French. The study investigates: (1) the extent to which self-assessment is a valid and reliable in…
