Earthquake disasters and resilience in the global North: Lessons from New Zealand and Japan
In 2011 two significant earthquakes tested the world's most seismically resilient communities: the Christchurch earthquake in New Zealand and the Tohoku earthquake in Japan. As with people of the distant past, contemporary Americans inter funerary remains or “grave goods” with their dead. The analysis of contemporary artifact interment in the United States is an initial focus of this study. Survey data gathered from 22 morticians in seven states have been used to explain modern funerary trends and motives of the bereaved. The existence of an Oxford dramatic piece of i636 variously called Moore's Mask or The Moor's Mask has been known to scholars since I89I, when F. G. Fleay included it in a list ofUniversity plays in English.' Fleay gave no source for his information, however, and the location of the manuscript has hitherto been unknown. G. E.
