Part II. America is (Still) America
The purpose of this conversation is to scrutinize America’s caste structure and explore its ideologies of race and justice. To that end, we explore historical structures and institutions hindering or advancing justice from America’s perilous past to the contradictions of today. Further, we define race and racism, propose three axioms of race and justice (or injustices), and deconstruct the architecture of and ongoing fortification of America’s ca…

An Assortment of Meditations
Samuel M. Brown's Where the Soul Hungers is something of a grab bag of sundry reflections on the gospel. As Brown himself explains, the book is intended to be part “pure devotions” and part “philosophical essays” mixed with scattered attempts to “repent” or “celebrate life and the senses” (10–11). Frequently, he simply offers remarkably fresh interpretations of what might otherwise be considered all too familiar scriptures. Ultimately, this menag…
Special Admission
If this book serves as a reader's first entry into the perils of college athletics, they will not be able to look at any sporting event the same. Special Admission coincides with the timing of Operation Varsity Blues, the college acceptance scandal orchestrated by Rich Singer. Kirsten Hextrum contends the fact that families have been paying for their children to be admitted to schools for decades based on false athletic careers is not a big trans…
Large-scale Victorian manufacturers
This study presents the first available-and near-complete-list of large UK manufacturers in 1881, by complementing the employer data from that year's population census (recovered by the British Business Census of Entrepreneurs project) with employment and capital estimates from other sources. The 438 largest firms with 1 000 or more employees accounted for around one-sixth of manufacturing output. Examples can be found in most industries. Exploit…
The Psychopharmacological Thriller
Psychotropic medications have increasingly become a staple of modern life, with one in five adults now taking some kind of psychiatric pill. Consequently, our voracious consumption of psychotropic pills has begun to raise significant questions about how psychopharmacology radically transforms-modifies, manipulates, molds, and manufactures-human identities one pill at a time. Moreover, this biochemical micro-engineering of the human self has begun…
The Lost Black Scholar
Biographies give an in-depth view of individual lives, providing insight into how central figures faced the cultural, social, economic, and political climate of their time. David A. Varel's The Lost Black Scholar examines the life of William Boyd Allison Davis (known as Allison Davis), one of the nation's first black anthropologists. After graduating from Williams College, he started his academic career at Hampton Institute and Dillard University…
Portfolio entrepreneurship in farming
Whole population analysis based on census. • Farm size, population density and farmers' age are non-linear with probability of pluriactivity. • Low levels of regional variation. • Victorian married couple offered the most frequent means to share resources, and family members opened opportunities for additional business development. Urban market opportunities encouraged increased portfolio development as density increased in fringe urban areas
Local Economic Development Initiatives and the Transition From Training and Enterprise Councils to New Institutional Structures in England
Current British government economic development policy emphasises regional and sub-regional scale, multi-agent initiatives that form part of national frameworks to encourage a ‘bottom up’ approach to economic development. An emphasis on local multi-agent initiatives was also the mission of Training and Enterprise Councils (TECs). Using new survey evidence this article tracks the progress of a number of initiatives established under the TECs, usin…
Educating Social Workers to Establish Well-Formed Goals
Although effective goal-setting is universally accepted as good social work practice, students often struggle with establishing well-formed goals. Therefore, the authors have developed an educational approach to engage students in learning the skills of effective goal-setting. This manuscript presents a conceptual approach and instructional activities to prepare practitioners to establish well-formed goals, engage in goal-focused actions, and eva…
Group Work with Parents of Adolescent Sex Offenders
Interest and attention to adolescent sex offenders has increased greatly over the past twenty years. Allegations of adolescent sexual improprieties are known to have profound and disruptive repercussions on the entire family, especially the parents of the offending adolescent. Adolescent criminal acts, in general, result in a myriad of disconcerting emotions experienced by the parent(s). Although a great deal of attention is currently being focus…
Evaluation of Two Interviewing Skills Measures
This article reports an initial validation of an instrument that measures basic interviewing skills and compares its psychometric results with another instrument that has been used more frequently to measure similar skills. Four field supervisors rated 30 students' videotaped interviews (N=120) using two instruments, the validation, and a comparison instrument. The current validation instrument had high internal consistency reliability, a clear f…
Use, satisfaction and the influence of local governance regime
This paper compares the performance of English Business Link (BL) with Scotland’s Small Business Gateway and Wales’ Business Connect. Within England it compares BLs that are independent with those that are de facto subsidiaries of chambers of commerce or other organisations. Using 2002 large-scale survey data, the paper shows that BL has become the dominant public source of advice in England, with the RDAs and LSCs yet to make any impact. Market …
Changing Use of External Business Advice and Government Supports by SMEs in the 1990s

The resource-based theory of the firm indicates that …

Economic Modeling in SocialWork Education
Economic modeling provides academic administrators with a logical framework for analyzing costs associated with the processes involved in the delivery of social work education. The specific costs associated with activities such as teaching, research, and service may be determined for a school of social work as a whole or for specific responsibility centers (e.g., programs and services within the school). Economic modeling utilizes modern spreadsh…

Teaching mathematics in geography degrees
Within the constraints of viewing geography as an applied discipline with a large number of arts‐based students, the primary problem of teaching mathematics in a geography degree is argued to be one of contending the motivation for a symbolic and analytical approach. This paper explores ways in which motivation for mathematics can be impressed on students and then discusses those areas of mathematics necessary in geography. The final section expl…
