This study represents an initial attempt to determine and compare the levels of the intercultural sensitivity of three samples of student teachers in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Singapore using the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). A total of 317 student teachers participated in the study. Across the three samples, the majority of participants tended to see the world from an ethnocentric perspective and tended to simplify or polarize cultura…

Sleeping on a Wire
Israel is both Jewish state and national homeland to Jews the world over. But a fifth of its population is Arab, a people who feel themselves to be an inseparable part of the Arab nation, most of which is still technically at war with the State of Israel. During the Gulf War many Israeli Arabs found themselves in an absurd situation as they climbed atop their roofs, gas masks on their faces, to cheer on the missiles Saddam Hussein had aimed at Is…

Rural Settlement Patterns in Eretz-Israel
The pattern of settlement in Eretz-Israel (Palestine) is the result of two separate cultural systems, which have developed side-by-side in a small territory. One of the two systems is of modern origin, while the other was the result of long and continuous development. Paradoxically, the Jewish pattern is rigid and, contrary to prevailing trends, strongly nucleated. The 'traditional' Arab patterns, on the other hand, are more varied and dynamic.Th…

Agricultural Intensification and Population in Northern Samaria
Spatial analysis of historical migrations in Samaria
Israel into Palestine
Settlement patterns in Judea and Samaria
Northern Samaria
In northern Samaria, Arab settlement has expanded by a process of colonization from parent villages during the past century. The changes in settlement patterns were analysed and the relative tendencies for randomness, regularity, and clustering were then estimated by variance/mean ratios, to test whether the settlement process can be explained by Hudson's three‐stage model for rural settlement. No definite answer could be given, because the effec…
The Bunched Settlement Pattern
The pattern of settlement which prevails in parts of Western Samaria and Western Hebron resembles a 'bunch', because its components form loose groups along stream valleys, hill-tops, and other patches of arable soils. The mean nearest- neighbour distances between the hamlets are less than two kilometres, but in most cases, conventional quantitative analysis fails to identify the bunches because the factor of accessibility and roughness of terrain…
The Relationship between Settlement Pattern and Resource Utilization
David Grossman, The Relationship between Settlement Pattern and Resource Utilization: The Case of North-Eastern Samaria, Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Vol. 6, No. 1 (1981), pp. 19-38
Population Growth in Reference to Land Quality
The author examines trends in rural population distribution in Samaria between 1922 and 1975. Changes in the relationship between population density and use of agricultural resources during this period are analyzed. Population densities and inter-censal rates of growth for all available censuses (including two official estimates) [are] calculated and...correlated with indices of land use and relief. The main conclusion is that contrary to the wid…
Satellite Settlements in Western Samaria
THE establishment of satellite settlements has long been used as a means of settlement diffusion. One variation is a branch-like diffusion pattern with expansion directed to marginally productive lands.' The purpose of this article is to explain the diffusion of satellite settlements, identified hereafter as offshoot settlements, in such areas. Our main concern is to explain the relationship between their distribution and the distribution of farm…
The Process of Frontier Settlement
The rural-directed migrations of Ibo farmers which are mainly associated with short-term tenancies are examined in this article on the basis of field work conducted in Nikeland, one of the destinations of the northern Ibo migrant farmers. The factors which stimulate migration are discussed by examining and analyzing the relative representation of various source communities in Nikeland. Shortage of land, suggested by past records of famines and ex…
