  • Tax Collecting in Byzantine Egypt

    Open Access•A E R Boak•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•1947•References: 1

In this article there is presented a small group of hitherto unpublished tax receipts from Egypt which belong to A.D. 309 and 314. They come from the archive of Aurelios Isidoros, a farmer and occasional local office-holder of the village of Karanis, and with the other papyri of the same collection are in the possession of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The chief interest which these texts hold for students of Byzantine Egypt lies in the picture w…

Although we have numerous references to gild associations in Greco-Roman Egypt, examples of Greek nomoi or laws which regulated their organization are extremely rare. For the Ptolemaic period there is only P. Lond. 2710, the incomplete nomos of the gild of Zeus Hypsistos, dating from the late first century B.C., published by Roberts, Skeat, and Nock in 1936, and for the Byzantine epoch the fragmentary law of a fifthcentury gild, apparently of ban…

The political achievements of the Greek people are so manifold and so important that any student of modern politics naturally is tempted to turn to ancient Greece to find the origin of, or parallels to, recent developments in his own field. And so there are not wanting those who would see in certain unions or associations of Greek states anticipations of the ideas which are incorporated in the newly constituted League of Nations. However, the vie…
