  • Permafrost is warming at a global scale

    Open Access•Boris K Biskaborn, Sharon L Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Communications•2019

Permafrost warming has the potential to amplify global climate change, because when frozen sediments thaw it unlocks soil organic carbon. Yet to date, no globally consistent assessment of permafrost temperature change has been compiled. Here we use a global data set of permafrost temperature time series from the Global Terrestrial Network for Permafrost to evaluate temperature change across permafrost regions for the period since the Internationa…

  • Traditional Iñupiat Ice Cellars (SIĠḷUAQ) in Barrow, Alaska

    Open Access•Kelsey E Nyland, Anna E Klene et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 14

Ice cellars are a natural form of refrigeration constructed within permafrost. They are traditionally employed by indigenous Arctic peoples to store harvested wildlife. Recent reports from Alaska indicate that ice cellars are "failing" through mechanisms that include flooding and collapse, which are often attributed to climate change. In cooperation with local stakeholders, we instrumented five cellars to record internal air temperature in Barrow…

  • Evidence and Implications of Recent Climate Change in Northern Alaska and Other Arctic Regions

    Open Access•Larry D Hinzman, Neil D Bettez et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2005

  • Pingo growth ages in the delta area, Adventdalen, Spitsbergen

    Open Access•Kojiro Yoshikawa, Kenji Yoshikawa et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1996•References: 3

The open-system pingos of Spitsbergen are formed outside terminal moraines, fault zones, and delta areas. Pingos in this study area were located near the shore in active geologic uplift areas. Three open-system pingos in the Adventdalen delta area of Spitsbergen were examined. Pingos closer to shore are younger in age and those farther away are older. Growth of these pingos occurs rapidly after initial submarine uplift and a minimum thickness of …
