  • When Christianity Became a Shūshi 宗旨

    Open Access•Christoph Kleine•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Journal for…•2023

Cultural encounters, entanglements, and comparisons were the driving force behind the formation of a global history of religion. Such encounters require the formation of comparative concepts; for Europeans, the most important of these was ‘religion’ . With European expansion, and especially its forays into Asia starting in the late fifteenth century, ‘religion’ gradually became a general term to describe a distinct subset of human culture, with e…

  • Rethinking the Interdependence of Buddhism and the State in Late Edo and Meiji Japan

    Open Access•Christoph Kleine•ARTICLE•Japanese Journal of Religious…•2022

This article asks how the Buddhist paradigm of the interdependence between the Buddha’s law and the ruler’s law was modified over the centuries and reinterpreted by nineteenth-century authors in the face of rapid political, social, and epistemic changes. An analysis of relevant texts reveals continuities as well as discontinuities. While the paradigm’s basic function of guaranteeing autonomy and protection to Buddhist institutions remained largel…

  • Historicizing Secularity

    Monika Wohlrab-Sahr, Christoph Kleine•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 4

Drawing upon the critique of secularization theory, especially its lack of historical depth, this article outlines a research agenda that focuses on a specific - but fundamental - aspect of secularization: it aims at the historicization of conceptual distinctions and institutional differentiations between the religious and the secular. The authors employ the heuristic concept of 'secularity' to refer to these demarcations, and argue that seculari…

Katrin Killinger, Christoph Kleine et al.•ARTICLE•Asian Medicine•2020

This special section of Asian Medicine brings together three scholars of the history of healing practices and medicine in premodern Asian societies to explore whether and how emic boundaries between religion and medicine were drawn in different historical contexts. In this introduction, we use the example of ancient Japan in an attempt to show how first steps towards a separation of religion and medicine can be identified, even when they have not…

  • Comparative Secularities

Christoph Kleine, Monika Wohlrab-Sahr•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 15

In view of the questionability of the concept “religion” as an analytical category for the investigation of pre-modern, non-Western cultures, how can one still pursue the history of religion or historical sociology of religion? Roughly speaking, scholars of religion can be placed between two poles with regard to this question: (1) those who reject the cross-cultural use of “religion” as a comparative concept and (2) those who believe they cannot …

The project seeks to explore the boundaries that distinguish between the religious and non-religious, in modern as well as pre-modern societies. In doing so, we are aligning ourselves with current debates but we are approaching the debated issues from a basic theoretical perspective. At present, a general distinction can be drawn between three narratives: The first claims the dwindling presence and relevance of religion ("secularisation"); the se…
