UIST is a premier forum for innovations in the software and hardware of human-computer interfaces. The UIST demo program enables attendees to experience firsthand the most interesting next-generation user interface technologies. The UIST 2013 demo program featured technologies ranging from energy-harvesting interactive paper to pneumatically actuated materials, providing attendees a vivid preview of some of the interactive systems that might shap…
Demo hour
Demo Hour highlights new prototypes and projects that exemplify innovation and novel forms of interaction. Audrey Desjardins, Editor During the 2013 TEI conference attendees showcased and experienced more than 50 demos. The projects featured novel interactions and tangible experiences in the form of installations, objects, and art pieces. We selected interactive works that explore new types of relations with objects and materials---for example, u…
Materiality matters---experience materials
ACM CHI 2012 conference organized a panel titled 'Material Interactions - From Atoms and Bits to Entangled Practices'. The panel was specifically arranged to discuss assemblages of digital and physical materials and how these compositions might form and enable new experiences, as well as questions related to how we might conceptualize the inseparability of digital materials, user experiences, and the social context. While the panelists agreed tha…

The Tangible Media Group has done a series of investigations into new multi-modal computer interfaces that utilize gesture and the sense of touch to improve interpersonal communication, education, and access to digital information. “Interactive surfaces” are one of our most promising lines of research and this article will look in depth at the design, implementation, and possible applications of interactive surfaces through an example project, Su…
Urban Simulation and the Luminous Planning Table
The development of multilayered manipulative platforms that integrate digital and physical representations will have a significant impact on urban design and planning processes. Their usefulness will be in their ability to combine and update digital and tangible data in seamless ways to enhance the design process of the professional and the communication process with the public. The Luminous Planning Table (LPT) is one of the first prototypes to …
