  • Rodents Under the Lens: The Power of Education and Imagery in Conservation

    Boris Álvarez, Mauricio-René Herrera-Marín et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2026

This study examines how aesthetic framing and informational content shape public attitudes toward rodents in Chile – a taxonomic underdog often portrayed as a nuisance rather than an ecologically relevant species. Rodent perceptions are fraught with symbolic stigma, hindering their inclusion in conservation agendas. An experimental survey with 463 participants tested responses to different stimuli: an unpleasant image, a pleasant image, an inform…

  • Revealing relational impacts of thermal retrofit for energy justice in low-income urban housing

Open Access•Alejandra Schueftan, Àlex Boso et al.•ARTICLE•Energy for Sustainable Development•2026

We investigate how thermal retrofitting influences household well-being and energy justice among low-income residents in southern Chile using a mixed-methods, convergent design. The quantitative strand compares 103 retrofitted with 103 non-retrofitted households; the qualitative one includes 18 interviews balanced by retrofit status. Retrofitted homes reported markedly fewer adverse outcomes: feelings of cold were reported by about one in seven r…

  • The Paradox of Cleaning the Air: Social Dynamics of Air Quality Perceptions in Urban Settings

    Open Access•Àlex Boso, Boris Álvarez et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2026•References: 1

We examined how social dynamics shape perceptions of urban air quality. Although air quality has improved in several European cities, public perceptions often lag, with many perceiving it as worsening. Drawing on theories of environmental risk perception and a georeferenced survey of residents in Barcelona and Madrid, we used regression models to assess how factors such as population density, income inequality, and sociodemographic characteristic…

  • Breathing dirty air, struggling in school: The case of air pollution and Student Learning in Chile

Open Access•A Hofflinger, Àlex Boso et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Environment•2025•References: 66

Air pollution has been linked to various health problems in children, including respiratory and neurological issues. Existing research has also found that exposure to air pollution can affect children's cognitive ability and academic performance, with some studies showing a decrease in test scores and grade point averages associated with increased exposure to hazardous air pollution. This study examined the association between air pollution and c…

  • Automated Futures, Altered Priorities: The Impact of Technological Change on Environmental Attitudes and Policies

Àlex Boso, Boris Álvarez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•2024•References: 14

Nearly half the tasks currently performed by humans could be automated, which means that large segments of society are expected to seek new jobs within the next few years. Automation and digitalization can be critical in reducing greenhouse gasses and combating climate change. However, they may also reduce individual support for environmental policies. The economic changes brought about by these innovations could reduce environmental concerns amo…

  • When automation hits home: Exploring the nuanced relationship between job risk and support for universal basic income

    Open Access•Ignacio Rodríguez-Rodríguez, Ignacio Rodríguez Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Information•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 86

Technological change is causing major transformations in the nature of work and the labor market. As a result, there is a growing interest in studying the relationship between automation of jobs and attitudes toward universal basic income as a potential solution to address the socioeconomic challenges posed by technological advancements. Hence, the exploration of a universal basic income and other innovative ways to restructure the welfare state …

  • Air pollution, well-being, and quality of life in Latin America: A systematic review

  • Unveiling Spatial Patterns of Exposure and Risk Perception to Air Pollution: A Case Study in Chilean Patagonia

    Àlex Boso, Sebastián Ibarra et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Wood smoke pollution has emerged as a major public health issue in southern Chile. This paper endeavors to find evidence of environmental inequity by looking into the spatial associations between sociodemographic characteristics, exposures, and risk perception to air pollution. We integrate primary georeferenced survey data with estimates of excess outdoor exposure to wood smoke in Coyhaique, one of the most polluted cities in Latin America. Our …

  • Breathing Clean Air or Cheaply Heating Your Home: An Environmental Justice Dilemma in Chilean Patagonia

    Open Access•Àlex Boso, A Hofflinger et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 38

Cities in southern Chile face serious environmental pollution due to extensive use of firewood for heating and cooking. Lack of access to cleaner energy fuel, low-efficiency building materials, and a cold climate exacerbate the problem, which increases the deforestation of the native forests of Patagonia. While environmental justice research has established clear links between air pollution hazards and vulnerable populations, little is known abou…

  • Who buys certified firewood? Individual determinants of clean fuel adoption for promoting the sustainable energy transition in southern Chile

Open Access•Boris Álvarez, Àlex Boso et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Sustainability and Society•2021

  • Uso de beca estatal de alimentación para estudiantes universitarios según factores sociológicos

    Open Access•Ruben Sanchez-Sabate, Boris Álvarez et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Latinoamericana de…•2021

(analytical)Knowing the influence of sociodemographic factors in the use of the Junaeb Baes food benefit granted by the Chilean Government to low-income university students is necessary to increase the social benefit of this state program. The variables gender, mode of residence, major and year, ethnicity and socioeconomic position were considered. A survey was applied to 114 Chilean university students. The results show that socioeconomic positi…

  • Narratives of resistance to technological change: Drawing lessons for urban energy transitions in southern Chile

    Open Access•Àlex Boso, Jaime Garrido-Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 13

  • Examining Patterns of Air Quality Perception: A Cluster Analysis for Southern Chilean Cities

    Open Access•Àlex Boso, Boris Álvarez et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2019•References: 48

Various medium-sized cities in southern Chile are saturated by air pollution caused by woodsmoke. In this study, we developed a segmentation model to assess the public's perceptions, understanding of health risks and emotional responses to poor air quality. To date, this is the first segmentation model dealing with public perception in cities contaminated by woodsmoke. A survey ( N = 489) was conducted in Temuco and Padre las Casas, Chile, which …
