  • The Distribution of Schizophrenics in Nottingham: A Reply

    John A Giggs•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1975•Cited by: 6

Gudgin's comments appear to misinterpret the suggestions made in the author's earlier paper. It was then suggested only that environmental factors may cause or precipitate schizophrenia. The initial hypothesis was not narrowly defined, but explicitly introduced the concept of multiple-factor causation. With new data now available, there are now many opportunities for longitudinal studies of schizophrenia and geographers can make contributions whi…

  • Factorial Ecology and Factor Invariance: An Investigation

    John A Giggs, Paul M Mather•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1975•Cited by: 8

The application of factor analysis to the study of areal differentiation is a widely used methodological procedure in geography and other spatial disciplines [7; 46]. Since the early 1960s the majority of studies in this field have involved the analysis of variations in the structural dimensions and spatial patterns of various phenomena (chiefly population and housing characteristics) within cities [45; 46]. Inevitably, after nearly a decade of w…

  • The Distribution of Schizophrenics in Nottingham

    John A Giggs•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1973•Cited by: 27

The distributions of selected schizophrenic populations in Nottingham are analysed. The main hypotheses concerning the aetiology of schizophrenia are discussed. The possibility that several aspects of the social and urban environment explain the areal variations in the incidence of schizophrenia is investigated by means of oblique factor analysis. The results suggest that these 'ecological' factors may form an important link in the causal chain. …
