A framework for statistical inferential decisions in spatial pattern analysis
The desire of many geographical information science (GIS) practitioners to undertake sophisticated spatial pattern analysis has been facilitated by the increasing availability of specialised software and the appearance of pedagogic papers illustrating the application of various techniques. However, the appropriate use of these techniques also requires an understanding of the nature of hypothesis testing and statistical inference for spatial data.…
Spatial choice modelling: New opportunities to incorporate space into substitution patterns
This paper is designed to review recent developments in choice modelling that offer promise for studying spatial choices. In particular, we focus on the ability of general choice models to account for a richer pattern of spatial substitution than afforded by early choice models. We argue that the generality offered by these choice models is sufficient to rethink the current view that spatial choice is a distinct field of inquiry. Our conclusion i…
Using local statistics for boundary characterization
Relaxing the nearest centre assumption in central place theory
Relaxing the nearest centre assumption in central place theory
A Variance-Stabilizing Coding Scheme for Spatial Link Matrices
In spatial statistics and spatial econometrics two coding schemes are used predominately. Except for some initial work, the properties of both coding schemes have not been investigated systematically. In this paper we do so for significant spatial processes specified as either a simulta-neous autoregressive or a moving average process. Results show that the C-coding scheme emphasizes spatial objects with relatively large numbers of connections, s…
The Exact Distribution of Moran's I
In analogy to the exact distribution of the Durbin-Watson d statistic for serial autocorrelation of regression residuals, the exact small sample distribution of Moran's I statistic (or alternatively Geary's c) can be derived. Use of algebraic results by Koerts and Abrahamse and theoretical results by Imhof, allows the authors to determine by numerical integration the exact distribution function of Moran's I for normally distributed variables. For…
Spatial Data Analysis in the Social and Environmental Sciences
Population density, crowding and human behaviour
The author reviews the existing literature on density and crowding from a geographical perspective, with a focus on the concerns of urban geographers. Several types of empirical studies are described and reviewed, and research on models of crowding is outlined
Models of Spatial Processes: An Approach to the Study of Point, Line and Area Patterns
1. An Introduction to spatial processes 2. Point patterns: Poisson process model 3. Point patterns: mixed Poisson process models 4. Truly contagious models, disturbed lattices and information theory 5. Line patterns 6. Area patterns: the cell model 7. Area patterns: the Johnson-Mehl model 8. Area patterns: clumping models
Urban Crowding and Its Consequences

Probability model approach to map pattern analysis
Crowding and Behavior
Structural Inference in Transportation Networks
Using elements of both statistical inference and graph theory, this paper demonstrates how some properties of a complete network can be inferred by observing parts of it. The approach is considered especially beneficial when cost, time, or other constraints prohibit the collection of complete information on the network under consideration
Some Models of the Random Subdivision of Space
