Inter-individual differences in intra-individual variability in personality within and across contexts
Bushfires, Human Health Economics, and Pyrogeography
Bushfires (landscape fires) are a key Earth system process that affects humans and our societies and economies. In a recent article, we explored the coupling of humans to landscape fire through the lens of human health impacts of bushfire smoke. We noted that such an approach demands recognition of the indirect impacts and costs of bushfires that cannot be captured by simplistic proxies such as deaths directly attributable to a fire front. Evalua…
Bushfire Smoke: An Exemplar of Coupled Human and Natural Systems
Carbon-based microscopic particles have provided a crucial line of evidence in understanding the coupling between humans and fires. Through the sedimentary record, they have informed our understandings of the patterns of climate and humans on fire activity through time. The extent of contemporary atmospheric biomass burning emissions has become apparent through satellite monitoring, motivated by concerns about the effect on the climate system. So…

Options, Sunspots, and the Creation of Uncertainty
The authors present two examples in which the addition of an option market leads to sunspot equilibria despite the fact that no sunspot equilibria exist without the market. These examples highlight limitations in two prevalent views of option markets. It is often assumed that option markets help complete otherwise incomplete markets. The authors demonstrate that they can instead increase the number of events agents wish to insure against. As in F…
Two examples of the role of ecological biogeography in Australian prehistory: The fire ecology of Callitris intratropica, and the spatial pattern of stone tools in the Northern Territory
The author contends that ecological biogeography or analysis of contemporary ecological relationships can provide information on a speculative discourse associated with Palaeo-ecological and historic bio-geographic evidence. The contribution of ecological biogeography to two pre-historical problems, the impact of Aboriginal burning on vegetation and the spatial variation of stone tools is illustrated
