  • Poetry as Investigative Pedagogy: Issues of Ethics and Praxis in Hay and Thorne’s Last Days of the Mill, 2012

    Open Access•Pete Hay•ARTICLE•Swamphen a Journal of Cultural…•2017

This paper examines dilemmas of ethics and practice in the author’s co-written Last Days of the Mill (2012). The usefulness of poetry as a tool of social inquiry is considered, both in the immediate context of a dying pulp mill in an industrial town in northern Tasmania, and the wider symbolic import of the mill’s demise within an island wedded to an unrealisable vision of industrial greatness. It is argued that there are forms of knowing in whic…

  • What the Sea Portends: A Reconsideration of Contested Island Tropes

    Open Access•Pete Hay•ARTICLE•Island Studies Journal•2013•Cited by: 40•References: 9

This paper argues for a shift in the focus of island-themed scholarship away from theories of islandness toward an engagement with psychologies of island experience. The former project has become mired in intractable dilemmas. The present paper pursues two linked lines of observation. First, it is maintained that integral to any coherent notion of islandness is a psychology that simultaneously assimilates containment with remoteness and isolation…

  • Balding Nevis: Place Imperatives of an Invisible Cohort within Tasmania's Forest Communities

    Open Access•Pete Hay•ARTICLE•Geographical Research•2008•References: 10

An under-recognised cohort within Tasmania's forest communities is identified, one that shares the social and cultural background of Timber Communities Australia's constituency, but holding deeply antipathetic views toward current forest regimes. Deploying ethnographic data gathered in the upper North Esk country in Tasmania's North-Eastern Tiers, where this cohort seems to predominate, the elements of a deep attachment to place are explicated: t…

  • A Phenomenology of Islands

    Open Access•Pete Hay•ARTICLE•Island Studies Journal•2006•Cited by: 57•References: 12

The question is posed: is a coherent theory of islandness – nissology – possible? Faultlines within constructions of islands and islandness are noted. Some of these axes of contestation have remained latent but have the potential to be sharply divisive. Three of the identified faultlines are examined – the nature of the island ‘edge’, the import for questions of island memory and identity of massive inward and outward movements of people, and the…

  • Defending Island Ecologies: Environmental Campaigns in Tasmania and Taiwan

    Open Access•Henry C L Chen, Pete Hay•ARTICLE•Journal of Developing Societies•2006•References: 9

The article compares and contrasts the iconic environmental campaigns of two island jurisdictions, Tasmania and Taiwan–the Franklin-Gordon ‘wild rivers’ campaign in the first case; the Chilan Forest campaign in the second. The features of each campaign are delineated–the levels of government involved; the institutional fault lines that developed; the scale of campaign operations; activist tactics; and the significance, within their respective con…
