  • The Impact of Tabula Rasa Actions and Laissez-Faire Planning Inaction on Urban Landscape Dynamics

    Open Access•Ioan Ianoş, Cerasella Crăciun et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This case study of the Văcărești area in Bucharest documents what happened to an abandoned communist urban megaproject, which had been undertaken in a typical tabula rasa manner, applying the dictatorial politics of the communist regime. A significant monastic complex was razed, and a massive riverine holding basin was partially constructed in the 1980s. The area then experienced several decades of rewilding of the basin and of uncontrolled urban…

  • Creativity in rural development

    Tony Sorensen•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2009

The role of creativity in place development is contentious. Florida's work on the creative class has achieved cult status among some academics, but is excoriated by others. I am one of those who are convinced of the large and growing role of creative people in economic and social development, but who dissents from major sections of Florida's analysis, especially his profound urban bias. This article explains why I believe that creativity is cruci…

  • Regional Economic Governance

Colin Hearfield, Tony Sorensen•ARTICLE•Space and Polity•2009•Cited by: 2

The focus of this paper is on the extent to which emerging forms of regional economic governance may be read as the burgeoning formation of regionally constituted, self-governing communities, and yet, somewhat ambiguously, as a new technology of central government. It begins by considering the distinction between ‘governance’ and ‘government’ and the extent to which current regional economic governance practices in the state of New South Wales, A…

  • Changing Governance of Australian Regional Development

Tony Sorensen, Neil Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Space and Polity•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 7

Regional economic and social development is an important public issue in most countries, yet among the least successful. In Australia, some 40 years of trial and error regional strategy appear to have had limited success in securing long-range economic and social development leading to more diversified economies, population growth and converging regional wellbeing. The paper explores the nature of Australia's regional development problem and its …

  • Doing the Right Thing

    Open Access•Brian Dollery, Neil Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Society•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Intense financial pressure and threats of dissolution through amalgamation in local government structural reform programs have forced regional and rural councils across Australia to consider new organizational arrangements for service delivery. As a consequence, an ingenious array of institutional models has been developed and implemented over the recent past. However, the very spontaneity that has engendered this remarkable process has meant tha…

  • The Role of Tourism in the Economic Transformation of the Central West Queensland Economy

    Tony Sorensen, Roger Epps•ARTICLE•Australian Geographer•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 2

Central West Queensland's predominantly pastoral sector experienced considerable hardship in the decade to 1996 as the consequence of drought and low commodity prices. The social and economic consequences were both large and spatially diverse. Those often remoter shires, characterised by few people and services, experienced sharp decline on both dimensions. In contrast, some of the larger and more accessible towns managed to stabilise or even inc…

  • Regional Weil‐Being in Australia Revisited

    Open Access•Tony Sorensen, H C Weinand et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Geographical Studies•1991•Cited by: 4•References: 6

There have been many studies of regional well‐being in Australia, but few match the range of variables and spatial detail employed in this paper. Twenty two socio‐economic variables were drawn from the 1986 census and used to classify all 148 Commonwealth electorates. Two procedures were adopted, both based on a principal components analysis, and compared to test the robustness of the classifications generated The first approach summed factor sco…
