Fostering equity in early years mathematics classrooms through the promotion of dialogic practices
Equity and marginalisation in mathematics education remains an ongoing concern. Classroom discourse has been seen to impact on student performance with dialogic practices being effective in providing for more equitable student participation. This paper investigates two examples of classroom discourse in relation to inclusive participation in early years mathematics classrooms. Drawing on data from a broader research project focusing on co-designi…
Mapping dialogic space in exploratory, disputational, and cumulative talk: A linguistic analysis
Theoretical and practical interest in how classroom talk can aid thinking and learning has increased in recent decades. Key studies have identified three types of talk that characterise student collaborations in group learning tasks, namely disputational, cumulative, and exploratory talk. Exploratory talk is described as the most productive for thinking and learning, and key to this is the opening of dialogic spaces in which students explore and …

Beckett, Confined (?): Creativity and Constraints in Life and Letters
This article’s title, inspired in part by the recent pandemic, glosses different aspects of confinement that characterize both Beckett and his œuvre: spatial, cultural, physical and, most importantly, linguistic. The latter, as revealed famously in his 1937 “Letter to Axel Kaun”, foregrounds creativity as an act of “boring holes into language” to uncover the music, or silence, the something, or nothing, that lay beneath. Curiously, the second vol…

Nature, a Love Story: Marie Nimier’s éco-critique in La Plage
Marie Nimier’s recent fiction highlights the importance of natural ecology in the fictional protagonist’s search for self and for reparations with the past. In La Plage (2016), the juxtaposition of the Anthropocene’s disastrous destruction of nature with the emotional catastrophes of a heroine known to the reader simply as “l’inconnue” provides the background for a story of healing and redemption. Among the many aspects of the text that metaphori…

Learning from home learning: Crossing boundaries of place and identity

Integrating primary and secondary care to optimise hepatitis c treatment: Development and evaluation of a multidisciplinary educational ‘Masterclass’ series
Background: In Ireland and the EU, chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infection is responsible for a considerable health and economic burden. It is increasingly being recognised that addressing this global challenge requires effective cooperation between primary and secondary care and multidisciplinary approaches to care. As part of a project to integrate primary and secondary care for patients at risk of, or infected with HCV (‘Hepcare Europe’), we devel…

Faking revisited: Exerting strategic control over performance on the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure
Across four studies, we demonstrate that effects obtained from the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure, like those obtained from other indirect procedures, are not impervious to strategic manipulation. In experiment 1, we found that merely informing participants to “fake” their performance without providing a concrete strategy to do so did not eliminate, reverse, or in any way alter the obtained outcomes. However, when those same instruction…

Going With the Flow: Duras's Changing Economies of Desire
The conjunction of money and desire is an important focus of several of Duras's works where capital gains are associated with erotic prods (prostitution, seduction and voyeurism) and also social and political corruption. In Un Barrage contre le Pacifique, the theme of prostitution as sought-after by both brother and sister in a familial-based fortune seeking co-exists with the critique of a state-sponsored promotion of the colonial adventure as i…
Comparing the use of the empty number line in England and the Netherlands
Efforts to meet the needs of children's learning in arithmetic has led to an increased emphasis on the teaching of mental calculation strategies in England. This has included the adoption of didactical tools such as the empty number line (ENL) that was developed as part of the realistic mathematics movement in the Netherlands. It has been claimed that the English use of the ENL differs from that of the Dutch. In this study curriculum guidance mat…
Why do we have to do this?’ Primary trainee teachers' views of a subject knowledge audit in mathematics
This paper examines theoretical and empirical evidence related to primary teachers' subject knowledge in mathematics and considers the relevance of an audit of higher‐level subject knowledge to the subject knowledge required for teaching primary mathematics. Questionnaires and interviews were carried out to determine the views of generalist primary trainee teachers. Their views suggest that an audit of higher‐level subject knowledge may be seen a…
