  • Care crises and care fixes under Covid-19: The Example of Transnational Live-in Care Work

    Open Access•Sarah Schilliger, K Schwiter et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2023•Cited by: 9•References: 39

The COVID-19 pandemic brought care work to the forefront of attention. In many countries in the Global North, people became painfully aware that they had ‘outsourced’ a considerable share of this work to temporary migrants. Travel restrictions and lockdown measures disrupted transnational care arrangements and threatened the continuous provision of care. This article uses the example of transnationally organised live-in care in Switzerland to exp…

  • «Good Pay for Good Work»? Legitimation and Criticism in the Regulation Process of Round-the-Clock Elderly Care in Swiss Private Households

    Open Access•Jennifer Steiner•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2020

This article focuses on efforts to regulate live-in care in Swiss households. Based on a sociology of legitimation, the model is conceptualised as a fragile order with a need for legitimation, and expectations towards its regulation are examined. While claims to justice serve as principles of criticism, austerity-based claims legitimise the arrangement. The need for adjustment is dealt with in a way that the model remains possible. Regulation rem…

  • Geographies of care work: The commodification of care, digital care futures and alternative caring visions

    Open Access•K Schwiter, Jennifer Steiner•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2020•Cited by: 21•References: 99

This article explores the growing interest in care within geography. Focusing on care as waged work, we trace current transformations through commodification and digitalisation. We discuss how the private household is turning into a precarious and feminised workplace for a growing number of workers, and we show how this development is promoted by the rise of labour agencies that facilitate the transnational recruitment of care workers. The litera…

  • Using Fotonovelas to Promote Healthy Eating in a Latino Community

Melanie Sberna Hinojosa, David Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011

AN IDENTIFIED NEED EXISTS for culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate health literacy strategies for Latinos. These photos are the product of a community based participatory research project to create a fotonovela—a graphic novel familiar to and popular with many Latinos—to support healthy eating in Latino families. The collaboration between Centro De La Comunidad Unida/United Community Center (UCC) and the Medical College of Wisconsin…
