  • Tenure insecurity, precarious housing and hidden homelessness among older renters in New Zealand

Beverley Lorraine James, Laura Bates et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 38

Homelessness among older people is growing in western countries including New Zealand. The rise in renting among middle-aged and older people highlights tenure insecurity and the risk of homelessness for the first time in later life. We report on a dataset drawn from a larger project in which 108 tenants aged 55 and older were interviewed. Of those, nineteen had experienced homelessness (as defined by Statistics New Zealand) within the previous f…

  • From Translating for the World to Translation as the World: Two Cinematic Poets from Hong Kong

    Tara Coleman•ARTICLE•Journal of World Literature•2021

Grounded in the heterogenous linguistic and cultural landscape of Hong Kong, this article proposes a translational approach to the practice of world cinema, focusing on director Wong Kar-wai, via World Literature and the poetry of Leung Ping-kwan. Wong is a lyrical cinematic stylist, while Leung had a strong scholarly interest in cinema and produced many collaborations with visual artists. Both are highly attuned to the distinctiveness of daily l…

  • Home Tours: An approach for understanding dampness and wellbeing in the domestic environment

Open Access•Elliott Serjeant, Robin Kearns et al.•ARTICLE•Wellbeing Space and Society•2021

When research encounters are conducted within the home environment there is a need for strategies that are ethically and practically sensitive to the complex character of these places. We report on an approach to explore the management practices of damp and mouldy housing, and wellbeing implications for tenants living in private rentals in New Zealand. The objective of paying close attention to the embodied and mental activities that a tenant per…

  • You can’t put your roots down’: Housing pathways, rental tenure and precarity in older age

Laura Bates, Robin Kearns et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2020•Cited by: 11•References: 60

In light of housing affordability concerns, we examine older people’s experiences of renting within a context of enduring home-ownership norms and aspirations. Adapting Clapham’s housing pathways framework, we ask: How is rental tenure experienced by older people who have encountered precarity in their housing history? Drawing on interviews with 13 older tenants, we observe the uneasy relationship between tenure insecurity and housing quality, an…

  • Older residents’ experiences of islandness, identity and precarity: Ageing on Waiheke Island

    Open Access•Laura Bates, Tara Coleman et al.•ARTICLE•Island Studies Journal•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Island living can entail many difficult or challenging experiences for individual residents, as well as for island communities at large. We use a multifaceted understanding of precarity and resilience to conceptualise these island challenges, as experienced by older island residents. We focus on Waiheke Island, an offshore island that sits within the greater Auckland area, where experiences of entangled precarities can be observed. Our work explo…

  • Older adults’ experiences of home maintenance issues and opportunities to maintain ageing in place

    Tara Coleman, Robin A Kearns et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 43

This paper addresses the question of how older adults’ experiences of home maintenance issues shape their opportunities to maintain ageing in place. We explore this question through a case study of ageing in place on Waiheke Island, near Auckland, New Zealand. We draw on in-depth interviews with 28 older adults aged 65 to 94, as well as participatory photo elicitation interviews and research journals conducted with 11 of these participants. We ar…

  • Social Geographies of Education: Looking Within, and Beyond, School Boundaries

    Open Access•D Collins, Tara Coleman•ARTICLE•Geography Compass•2008•Cited by: 53•References: 37

Schools have received less attention from geographers than institutions such as the clinic and the hospital - despite the fact that, for most people, encounters with sites of medicine are rarer than encounters with sites of education. Indeed, schools are central to the geographies of children and young people, and to the organization of much family life. Moreover, they play a central role in shaping social identities. In this article, we provide …
