  • Between ' Trochas ', Orphans and Mourning: Migrant Mobilities and the Effects of US 'Soft' Remote Control in Ecuador

    Á Velasco, Soledad Álvarez Velasco•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 52

This article proposes a two-scale analysis of how US border externalisation is spatially embedded in Ecuador, producing place-making transformations. On a national scale, it has turned Ecuador into a ‘soft’ buffer to halt unwanted global migration to the US. On a cuerpo-territorio scale, it has had at least two effects. On the one hand, it has transformed migrant-sending communities into mourning and orphaned places as a direct effect of Ecuadore…

  • Migration and Crime in a Divided World: Strategies, Perceptions, and Struggles

    Open Access•L Achilli, A Missbach et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2023•References: 51

Contemporary research shows that current migration policies and technologies produce criminality. It would be advantageous, then, to understand how migrants make sense of and respond to these criminalizing migration policies, technologies, and practices. This volume delves deeply into criminalization processes, focusing on how migrants perceive and react to the enactment and implementation of policy. The articles take a close look at the day-to-d…

  • Por trocha: Circumventing the Episodical Criminalization of Migration in the Andes

Open Access•Á Velasco, Soledad Álvarez Velasco et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 25

We analyze how the criminalization of migration has taken hold in the borderlands of Ecuador and Colombia from 2000 to 2022, despite the existence of progressive legal frameworks in those two countries that have historically allowed for relatively open borders and recognition of migrants' rights. We use a historical and ethnographic approach to explore how criminalizing mechanisms have been implemented, showing that the criminalization of migrati…

  • Deportees in Transit Between Ecuador and the US: A Historical and Ethnographic Approach to Migrant Disobedience and its Spatial Impacts

    Open Access•Á Velasco, Soledad Álvarez Velasco•ARTICLE•Antipode•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 54

By focusing on the Ecuador−US postcolonial and transnational space and reconstructing trajectories of Ecuadoreans who migrated to the US, were deported and recommenced their undocumented transits to that same destination, this article analyses the migrant disobedience and its spatial impacts. The article proves how deportees in transits are not docile figures: their unruly mobilities re‐actualise historical disobedience against insurmountable col…

  • From Ecuador to Elsewhere

Open Access•Á Velasco, Soledad Álvarez Velasco•ARTICLE•Migration and Society•2020

Unlike other transit countries, Ecuador’s position as a transit country has just begun to be publicly addressed, having been more of a strategic public secret than a topic of public interest. Based on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2015 and 2016, this article discusses the dynamics of the (re)configuration of Ecuador as a transit country used by both immigrants and Ecuadorean deportees mainly from the United States to reach…

No…

  • Historicizing Mobility: Coyoterismo in the Indigenous Ecuadorian Migration Industry

    Open Access•Victoria Stone-Cadena, Victoria Stone‐Cadena et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 16

Based on ethnographic research in the Ecuadorian Highlands, this article puts the mobility, migration, and smuggling practices of Ecuador's indigenous people in historical and contemporary context. The people of Ecuador's Southern Highlands have been on the move for generations, and migration is deeply embedded in the social and cultural landscape. In the rural communities of Cañar, indigenous coyotes are more than facilitators of migration: they…
