  • This Book Says More Than the Entire Exhibition

    Jason Johnson, Jason L Johnson•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2025

This article centers on an exhibition entitled "Berlin in the Twentieth Century" put on by the East Berlin tourist office between late 1961 and early 1963. The exhibition opened just two months after the border's sealing through Berlin and drew over 300,000 visitors. • Not Special People

    Open Access•Jason Johnson, Jason M Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2023

In the 1980s, East Germany granted gay people extraordinary new rights in an attempt to neutralize them as a threat to the communist regime. Within this context of change, though, the East Berlin municipal government refused gay activists permission to form a state-sanctioned club for homosexuals. The East German legal apparatus required that the state address all petitions. An analysis of these Eingaben written by non-activists demonstrates a growing boldness to use the available legal structures to claim one's rights. The petitioners used the Eingaben system to assert their legitimacy as G…

In 2014, Sagi Schaefer’s States of Division: Border and Boundary Formation in Cold War Rural Germany appeared, followed in 2015 by Yuliya Komska’s analysis of the West German–Czechoslovak fron…

  • "Struggles in "the Stronghold of World Imperialism

    Jason Johnson•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2019

This article centers on the League of People's Friendship of the German Democratic Republic. The League, composed of a main organization in East Berlin and national partner societies scattered around the globe, served as a tool of nontraditional diplomacy for East Germany's ruling communist party across much of the Cold War. This article sketches out the activities of the League's partner organizations in the U.S.-the first analysis to do so-argu…
