Conceptualizing and Measuring the Quality of Democracy: The Citizens’ Perspective
In recent years, several measurements of the quality of democracy have been developed (e.g. Democracy Barometer, Varieties of Democracy Project). These objective measurements focus on institutional and procedural characteristics of democracy. This article starts from the premise that in order to fully understand the quality of democracy such objective measurements have to be complemented by subjective measurements based on the perspective of citi…

Learned Democracy? Support of Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe
In this article, the extent of support for democracy is determined for thirteen countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as in East Germany. In addition, West Germany, representing an established democracy, is included as a benchmark country. The analysis rests on the assumption, that a democracy can be regarded as consolidated only if it is supported by the majority of its citizens. The empirical analysis is based on comparative surveys c…

It Used to Be the Economy: Issues and Party Support in the 2002 Election
Most explanations for the red-green victory in the 2002 electionrefer to two issues that emerged in the final months of the campaign:the Iraq crisis and the flood in eastern Germany. The surpriseannouncement by President Bush to dramatically increase pressureon Iraq, including a possible invasion, put this issue squarely into thecenter of the election campaign. This issue emerged at the onset ofthe hot campaign phase, taking parties and candidate…

Citizens and the State

Addressing the problem from the citizen's perspective, it identifies the ten fundamental components of the view that representative democracy is under threat, an…

Postmaterialism and electoral choice before and after German unification
This article examines the implications of German unification for the relationship between postmaterial values and voters’ party preference. Based on longitudinal data covering 1983 through to 1995, the article argues and shows empirically that, in the post‐communist context: economic, immigration, and security issues became more salient to voters, while postmaterial issues, such as environmentalism are reduced in salience; as a result, the propor…
