  • Back to Black-Red: The Development of the German Party System before and after the 2025 Federal Election

    Frank Decker•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2025

The federal election of February 2025, triggered by the collapse of the traffic light coalition in November 2024, resulted in a marked rise in support for parties that are critical of, or openly hostile to, the political system. While the cdu / csu under newly elected Chancellor Friedrich Merz benefited only marginally from its position in opposition, it was the right-wing extremist AfD that capitalized most, nearly doubling its vote share and em…

    Open Access•Anne Küppers, Frank Decker•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 49

Welche Rolle s…

  • Wilhelm Lautenbach’s credit mechanics – a precursor to the current money supply debate

Frank Decker, Charles Goodhart et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of the History…•2022

This article assesses the theory of credit mechanics within the context of the current money supply debate. Credit mechanics and related approaches were developed by a group of German monetary economists during the 1920s-1960s. Credit mechanics overcomes a one-sided, bank-centric view of money creation, which is often encountered in monetary theory. We show that the money supply is influenced by the interplay of loan creation and repayment rates;…

  • The Monetary Union of Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom – Its Operation, Fragmentation and Break-up

    Open Access•Frank Decker•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2022

This article examines the monetary arrangements between Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom from the 1820s to the 1930s. It is argued that the three countries formed a monetary union for most of this period. A new analysis of inland and London exchange rates demonstrates that the union achieved a high degree of uniformity and stability, and that an international branch network of competing, private banks could successfully integrate vas…

  • From the Eternal Grand Coalition to the Traffic Light Alliance: The German Party System before and after the 2021 Federal Election

    Frank Decker, Philipp Adorf•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2022

The first German election without Angela Merkel as a candidate in over one and a half decades would turn out to be one of the most unpredictable in the history of the Federal Republic. For most of the election year, a conservative Green alliance appeared the most likely outcome, potentially even with a Green chancellor at its head. However, the final months of campaigning showcased the volatility of the increasingly fragmented party system and th…

  • Coalition Politics in Crisis

    Frank Decker, Philipp Adorf•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2018•Cited by: 1

The 2017 federal election illustrated the transformation of Germany's political party system with six parties managing to enter the Bundestag. With the Christian and Social Democrats finally coming to an agreement almost half a year after the election, a grand coalition is set to govern for two consecutive terms for the very first time. The Alternative for Germany's success also signaled the definite parliamentary establishment of right-wing popu…

Until 2013, right-wing populist or extremist parties were unable to establish themselves as a relevant political force in Germany. With the advent of the Alternative für Deutschland the party landscape has changed significantly. The window of opportunity for the newcomer was opened in 2013 by the Euro crisis. Combining euroskepticism with liberal economic policies and a conservative social issue agenda the AfD mainly capitalized on the neglecting…

    Frank Decker•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2014•Cited by: 1

The recent federal elections refuted a number of established hypotheses on the development of the German party system and contradicted the electoral strategies of nearly all parties involved. The outcome was neither a further fragmentation of the parliamentary landscape nor the unavoidable establishment of a grand coalition. On the contrary, in most cases, the respective parties failed as a result of their own mistakes in selecting adequate campa…

  • Governance beyond the nation-state. Reflections on the democratic deficit of the European Union

    Frank Decker•ARTICLE•Journal of European Public Policy•2002•Cited by: 29•References: 9

Many suggestions for an institutional improvement of European decision-making are based on the parliamentary model of government existing in the national member states. The widespread notion of 'democratic deficit' plays down the difficulties that will almost inevitably arise when transferring democracy from the national to the European level. Although the European Union has many features of a parliamentary federal state, it lacks a democratic fo…

  • Populism on Difficult Terrain: The Right- and Left-Wing Challenger Parties in the Federal Republic of Germany

    Frank Decker, Florian Hartleb•ARTICLE•German Politics•2007•Cited by: 10

Right-wing populist parties in Germany were unable to benefit from the success of their counterparts in neighbouring Western European states from the mid-1980s. Despite this failure, there were several attempts to establish such a party in Germany. Even the 'centre' of the political spectrum attempted to approach populist structures and content, and this was especially true of the FDP during the 2002 parliamentary election campaign. After a discu…

  • An Alternative Approach to European Union Democratization: Re-Examining the Direct Election of the Commission President

    Open Access•Frank Decker, Jared Sonnicksen•ARTICLE•Government and Opposition•2011•Cited by: 6•References: 20

A successful reform of any system of governance must be well informed of the system's own functional logic. In the context of its democratization, this article explores whether the institutional arrangement of the European Union has developed or behaves more like a presidential than a parliamentary system. Building on that, the authors re-examine the opportunities and feasibility of realizing that model as a step towards more democracy in Europea…

  • Looking for Mr. Right? A Comparative Analysis of Parties’ ‘Coalition Statements’ prior to the Federal Elections of 2005 and 2009

    Frank Decker, Volker Best•ARTICLE•German Politics•2010•Cited by: 6

Although literature on the topic of coalition formation has become nearly unmanageable and although parties' preferences are always at the centre of related theories, the preferences uttered by parties themselves ('coalition signals') have hardly played a role so far. A symptom of this neglect is the absence of a notional equivalent of the German 'Koalitionsaussage' in the English language. The recently introduced concept of 'pre-electoral coalit…

    Open Access•Frank Decker•BOOK•Populismus•2006

  • From a Five to a Six-Party System? Prospects of the Right-wing Extremist NPD

    Frank Decker, Lazaros Miliopoulos•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2009

Right-wing extremist and populist parties operate in a rather difficult social and political environment in Germany, rendering notable electoral success fairly improbable, especially when compared to other European countries. The main reason for this is the continuing legacy of the Nazi past. Nevertheless the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) managed to gain substantial votes in recent Land elections and became the leading force…

    Frank Decker, Jared Sonnicksen•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2010

The recent Bundestag election in Germany warrants consideration for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that the results are indicative of several trends developing since unification and that will continue to play an important, if not ever increasing role in German politics. These developments include the intensifying fragmentation of the German party system and German voters' growing electoral volatility, both of which are hampering t…
