Art Disarming Philosophy
Non-philosophy poses a challenge to philosophical thought, inspired by the work of François Laruelle. It questions the idea that philosophy, or other disciplines, can tell us what it means to think. This edited collection brings together an internationally known and interdisciplinary group of scholars, including a major new essay by Laruelle himself. Together they use non-philosophy to cross the boundaries between philosophy and performance. Phil…
Neighborhood associations and community development
Neighborhood associations (NAs) help build social capital, enhance a sense of community, and elevate civic engagement. While urban researchers have studied NAs, there has been limited systematic observation of alliances of NAs. This research examines how neighborhood alliances (NALs) facilitate the creation and expansion of community capital that impact grassroots governance. We examine six NALs in Omaha, Nebraska that represent more than 120 act…
Participatory action research (PAR) as democratic disruption
Pro-market and business approaches to management in the public sector (new public management – NPM) have created an audit culture in schools driven by top-down, high stakes accountability, and the fetishization of data. Within this context, authentic, qualitative, and democratic forms of inquiry, both in universities and schools, become easily co-opted. I argue in this article that the use of a community-based, participatory action research (PAR)…
How education researchers have colluded in the rise of neoliberalism
The Trump administration represents less a break from the Bush and Obama administration education reforms than an expansion of those reforms. I argue that academics have been complicit in these reforms through the depolitization and privatization of their scholarship and their adherence to a technological framework of knowledge production, dissemination, and utilization. I call for education professionals in universities and schools to build alli…

O Docente-Pesquisador
Investing in the Child Welfare Workforce
Responding to David Stoesz’s invited article criticizing the Children’s Bureau and the National Child Welfare Workforce Institute (NCWWI), the author’s inaccurate assertions are challenged, and new information is provided about the significant work underway to support the child welfare workforce. The Children’s Bureau has made historic investments in workforce capacity building, which bring multiple universities, public, and tribal child welfare …

The Action Research Dissertation
The first edition of this book was a first-of-its-kind reference, distilling the authors’ decades of action research experience into a handy guide for graduate students. The Second Edition continues to provide an accessible roadmap that honors the complexity of action research, while providing an overview of how action research is defined, its traditions and history, and the rationale for using it. The authors demonstrate that action research is …
The Three German Navies
A comparative study of the dissolution, transition and new foundation of naval forces in Germany after World War II, this book examines how post-war experiences such as captivity, war crimes persecution and the de-Nazification process set parameters for establishing East and West German navies. Douglas Peifer refutes previous interpretations that the end of the Third Reich in 1945 and German admission into NATO and the Warsaw Pact in 1955-56 mark…

Germany's Last Mission to Japan
When Germany surrendered, a U-boat carrying a secret cargo of uranium oxide and German officials was on its way to Japan. This book sheds new light on the mission
The Clash of the German Hunting Community and the Anti-Hunting Movement
On a frozen field 35 kilometers east of Dortmund, members of Germany'selite-government officials, business leaders, and royalty-assemble in the medieval city of Arnsberg for a 1,000 year ritual: theArnsberg Treibjagd (driven hunt). Like live-sized Hummelfiguren, adorned in Bavarian-style Loden coats, expensive Zeiss binoculars, priceless weapons, and accompanied by the German hunter's bestfriend, the Dackel, they ready themselves for the ancient an…
TheMauerschützenprozesseand the principle ofnullum crimen sine lege
More than 50 years after the end of the Nuremberg Tribunal, the Berlin Mauerschiitzenprozesse, a series of trials in the Nuremberg tradition, devoted to bringing to justice former GDR soldiers and officials involved in the application of deadly force against Republikfluchtlinge on the inner German borders, have reached their crescendo. More than 50 soldiers and officials have received sentences of up to six years’ imprisonment. Among the many iss…

Celibacy or Consummation in the Garden? Reflections on Early Jewish and Christian Interpretations of the Garden of Eden
The interpretation of Adam and Eve's sexual life was a matter of some concern for early Jewish and Christian exegetes. As Louis Ginzberg observed, several Jewish pseudepigraphical works as well as the writings of many of the early Church Fathers “presuppose that not only the birth of the children of Adam and Eve took place after the explusion from paradise (Gen 4:1ff), but that the first ‘human pair’ lived in paradise without sexual intercourse.”…
