The Strange Case of Welfare Chauvinism in Eastern Europe
According to welfare chauvinism, access to the welfare state should be reserved for the native population, whereas immigrants are seen as a drain on resources. The curious aspect of welfare chauvinism in Europe is that it is more prevalent in the East. Why is this the case? This article uses the European Social Survey (ESS) and the Life in Transition Survey (LITS) in order to locate the most robust individual-level determinants of welfare chauvin…
The Shape of Populism: Serbia before the Dissolution of Yugoslavia
The Shape of Populism examines socialist Serbia, then part of Yugoslavia, which in the late 1980s witnessed popular mobilization and an emergence of a populist discourse that both constructed and celebrated "the people." Author Marko Grdešić uses quantitative and qualitative analyses to show how "the people" emerge in the public sphere. This book examines over 300 protests and analyzes them in conjunction with elite events such as party sessions.…
Who Are the Neoliberals in Central and Eastern Europe? Assessing Public Support for Neoliberalism in 11 New EU Member States
Which groups in Central and Eastern Europe are more likely to support neoliberal ideas? This article uses quantitative evidence from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s Life in Transition surveys (2010 and 2016) in order to sketch the contours of public support for neoliberalism in the 11 new member states of the European Union. First, cross-country differences in economic attitudes are not very large. Second, consistent differ…
Thirty Years of Yugoslavia’s “Antibureaucratic Revolution”: A Long-Run Appraisal and New Avenues of Research
This special issue of Nationalities Papers presents an attempt to provide a fresh perspective on Serbia’s and Yugoslavia’s “antibureaucratic revolution” of 1988 and 1989. The 30th anniversary of this turbulent episode provides an opportunity to rethink our interpretation and offer a new appraisal of the event as well as open several new avenues of potentially productive research. This special issue builds on older research (Vladisavljević 2004, 2…
Looking Back at Milošević’s Antibureaucratic Revolution: What Do Ordinary Participants Now Think of Their Involvement
Most scholarship on Serbia’s antibureaucratic revolution of the late 1980s has emphasized elite actors while ignoring the motivations of ordinary participants. How do ordinary people describe their involvement? Moreover, given the antibureaucratic revolution’s dark side—such as exclusionary nationalism and political authoritarianism—it is important to investigate whether participants are willing to critically engage their personal political histo…
Neoliberalism and Welfare Chauvinism in Germany
Anti-immigration sentiments can take on a variety of forms, but a particularly prevalent version across Europe is welfare chauvinism. According to welfare chauvinism, the services of the welfare state should be provided only to natives and not to immigrants. Like many other European countries, German politics also features welfare chauvinism, and not only on the far right segment of the political spectrum. What drives welfare chauvinism? Most stu…

Images of Populism and Producerism: Political Cartoons from Serbia’s ‘Anti-Bureaucratic Revolution’
This article contributes to debates about the break-up of Yugoslavia by focusing on Serbia’s ‘anti-bureaucratic revolution’, a large protest wave that occurred in 1988. Unlike most discussions which focus on elite involvement, this article emphasises the wider cultural resonance of anti-bureaucratic populism. More generally, this article shows that populism can be strengthened if it is coupled with producerism, that is, a discourse that divides s…
Spatial Patterns of Thermidor: Protest and Voting in East Germany's Revolution, 1989-1990
This article engages in a spatial analysis of the link between protest and voting during the Wende, East Germany's revolution of 1989. Are the same places that protested more also the places that decided the revolution's fate by supporting CDU's ticket of quick reunification? The revolution is approached through the conceptual metaphor of Thermidor, a conservative backlash to the revolution's initial radical impulse. Spatial methods are used to i…
Serbia's Anti-Bureaucratic Revolution as Manipulation? A Cultural Alternative to the Elite-Centric Approach
Why did nationalism and socialism combine during Serbia's 'anti-bureaucratic revolution'? This article critiques the elite-centric approach prevalent in the literature and suggests a cultural argument instead. Three interconnected 'elective affinities' brought nationalism and socialism together and separated them from a weak liberal alternative: (1) the emergence of bureaucracy as a 'floating signifier'; (2) the search for enemies and a predilect…
Class Discourse in Croatia: Where Did It Go? Is It Coming Back
This article summarizes recent trends in Croatia with regard to class analysis and class discourse. It traces the main currents both in academic debate as well as more broadly in the public sphere. Issues of class were sidelined with the outbreak of war and the rise of nationalism in the 1990s. Later, neoliberalism further weakened class and leftist discourse. Research on class has been sporadic and rare. New developments among a younger generati…
Public Opinion, the Working Class and the Dissolution of Yugoslavia
Television and protest in East Germany’s revolution, 1989–1990: A mixed-methods analysis
This article uses a mixed-methods approach to analyze the relationship between television and protest during East Germany’s revolution. The content of television newscasts, both West German and East German, is analyzed together with protest event data. There are two key findings. First, West German coverage of protests is associated with an increase in protest in the first phase of the revolution. This finding emerges from time series analysis. S…
