  • Germans Begin to Confront their Recent Past

Katherine Buse, Dieter K Buse•ARTICLE•Debatte Journal of Contemporary…•2008

The article shows that by the early 1960s some Germans were making serious attempts to come to terms with their problematic past, including the attempted destruction of European Jews. The context of the 1950s, during which avoidance and forgetting dominated, is noted. Two decisive but very different books, published by Richard Errell and Hannah Vogt in 1961, are analyzed to illustrate the thoroughness with which they exposed the recent past. The …

  • Encountering and Overcoming Small-City Problems

    Open Access•Katherine Buse, Dieter K Buse•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban History•2008

During the nineteenth century, Bremen enhanced its economic viability through a series of engineering feats, but struggled with the social problems brought on by urban growth. The most notable technical challenge was maintaining access to the North Sea and Atlantic via the silt-prone Weser River. Katherine Buse, Dieter K Buse•ARTICLE•German Politics & Society•2008

Historians and political sciences have begun to discuss how and when postwar Germany overcame its authoritarian past and reestablished democracy and a tolerant civil society. This article argues that the national and regional Offices for Political Education have contributed significantly to the recivilizing process. The article provides the first preliminary academic attempt to outline the offices' historical background, their changing institutio…

    Open Access•Katherine Buse, Dieter K Buse•ARTICLE•Journal of History•2005

To extent the understanding of German nationality and nationalism during the Napoleonic era, this case study examines the anti-French writings and pamphlets of a pedagogue, Betty Gleim, and the petitions against craft monopolies by lower-class artisans and their wives. Instead of examining more of the texts of intellectuals, as historians have so frequently, the essay explores the traits ascribed to French and Germans by the teacher who also publ…

  • Sudbury's Working World

Katherine Buse, Dieter K Buse et al.•ARTICLE•Labour / Le Travail•1982
