Circulation, Encounters and Transformation
This paper explores the ways in which notions of gender, space and propriety are drawn upon by female migrants in performing their gender identities in new spaces of their migration to Hong Kong. It scrutinizes the narratives of women's circulation and encounters in the process of migration. The paper draws on post-structuralist approaches to reveal the ways in which the female migrants position themselves in the changing spaces of migration. We …
Female transnational migration, religion and subjectivity
Drawing on an analysis of in‐depth interviews with returned migrant women from East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, this paper considers the links between migration, religious beliefs and subjectivity. Low‐skilled migrant women, including domestic workers, have often been represented as marginalised. This paper argues that in the context of migration, women constantly move through trajectories of power using religion as a spiritual resource. Against th…
Women's Mobility, Changing Gender Relations and Development in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
This paper investigates the relationships between mobility and the constitution of gender relations and subjectivities of rural-urban female migrants in Indonesia. Employing an ethnographic approach, my research explores meanings of space and changing relationships for migrant subjects. A specific group of migrants — teachers and nurses from the outer islands of Eastern Indonesia — working in urban centers elaborate on their stories of migration.…
Knowing one's place
In this article I analyse the gendered space of transnational mobility by problematizing migrant subjectivity in everyday practices. In line with feminist perspectives I highlight the significance of the micro-scale experience of female migrants from Eastern Indonesia in acquiring mobility as a struggle for new subjectivity. I frame this migration as a production of the subjective space of power. Based on in-depth interviews with returned migrant…
Maiden voyages
Maiden Voyages is a fascinating, unusual study of the centrality, impact and place of sea travel on the lives of women in Eastern Indonesia. It shows how women there travel constantly by sea, to move between islands, to urban centres and even overseas. In doing so, they negotiate and cross and re-make their social boundaries. In contrast to the dominant economic approach to migration, this book uses Eastern Indonesian women's own travel accounts …
