Uneven Development through Profit Repatriation
This article provides the first comprehensive empirical analysis of global profit repatriation as a mechanism of uneven development, thereby challenging the development model of Foreign Direct Investment. Between 2005 and 2020, transnational corporations repatriated an annual average of one trillion USD, corresponding each year to 4.2% of the global FDI stock. Net profit flows take on a centripetal form: the biggest net losers are middle‐income c…
The Janus-faced genius of cities
Departing from Storper’s (2013) notion of a ‘genius of cities’ but extending the concept from agglomeration economies to inter-city networks and the built environment as foundations of cities’ genius, I argue that cities’ genius is Janus-faced. My contention is that cities’ specific environments not only breed all the ‘good’ innovations that drive innovation and growth but they also generate the ‘bad’ ones, which allow for the development of the …
Primacy
The term urban primacy means, in its most general understanding, that a country's largest city has more than twice the population of the second largest city. In its original sense, a close and universal relationship between size and grandeur of a city was postulated. With developmentalism, modernization theory, overpopulation alarmism, and the quantitative revolution in social sciences, the connotation shifted: primacy became increasingly identif…
Global cities and the geographical transfer of value
The central argument of this article is that global cities are, due to their clustering of producer service firms, critical governance nodes in global production networks. More in particular, the article scrutinises the role of producer service firms in uneven development and, especially, in the geographical transfer of value (Hadjimichalis, 1984). Because the direct as well as the indirect mechanisms through which value is transferred geographic…
Global City Makers
Strategic planning, the real estate economy, and the production of new spaces of centrality. The case of Mexico City
Taking Mexico City as a case study, this paper deals with the production of new economic centralities caused by global city formation. After sketching out the emergence of delimitable global city zones as the new downtown in Mexico City, the role the massive influx of foreign direct investment into the real estate economy and the growth of Mexico City’s producer service sector have played in the making of the new downtown is analysed. In the four…
Introduction
The paper begins with an introduction into the interlocking network model ( INM ) initially specified by P eter T aylor in the context of the G lobalization and W orld C ities ( G a WC ) research network. For that purpose, the intellectual background, purpose, key principles and subsequent applications of the INM are presented. Since the overall purpose of the S pecial I ssue is to take research inspired by the INM further, this paper gives, seco…
Network or Hierarchical Relations? A Plea for Redirecting Attention to the Control Functions of Global Cities
The paper discusses in a personal appreciation of the literature whether the ‘interlocking world city network model’ ( IWCNM ) has contributed to overcoming the evidential crisis of world or global city research. After a brief summary of the main arguments made by John F riedmann and Saskia Sassen, the paper deduces methodological implications that follow from their economic‐geographical conceptualisation of global cities. In the third and fourth…
Commentary
A key aspect of how globalization and planning are tied together is that the traveling of planning ideas across nation-states has sped up and gained intensity. Such transnationality echoes similar conceptualization in economic geography, migration studies, and in the literature on “transnational urbanism.” Using the example of the transnational flow of strategic planning ideas and practices, this article highlights the rising role of policy touri…
World City Networks and Global Commodity Chains
There are two literatures that explicitly describe the spaces of flows that constitute contemporary globalization - World City Network analysis and Global Commodity Chain analysis. We explore the possibilities of their integration by returning to their common origins in world-systems analysis. Each model is described and critiqued and it is argued that each can be used to address some of the other's limitations. This is illustrated through world …
Global cities in Global Commodity Chains
In this article I assert that global cities are critical nodes in Global Commodity Chains because it is from them that producer services are provided. I explore forward linkages of producer service firms in Mexico City, showing that there are important service flows to companies responsible for the globalization of the 'Mexican' economy. Based on this finding I also indicate reasons why Mexico City is 'on the map' of global cities and of Global C…
Since the 1980s, the economies of Mexico and Chile have passed through a profound process of globalisation. The result has been a nodalisation of the cities' economies, documented by their high concentration of command and control functions essential for economic globalization. In order to specify the relationship between global city formation and the deepening of global integration we draw on the findings of the global city and global commodity …
Migration Theoretisieren
The article gives a review and critical discussion of contemporary theories of migration. It investigates the political and social reasons for theorizing migration, the different contexts, which were important for the emerging approaches. Although this branch of research is so strongly influenced, the authors observe certain progress in migration theories
Neue Entwicklungstendenz…
