Care Ethics and the Refugee Crisis
This book advocates for the philosophical import of care in re-evaluating problems of humanitarianism in the context of the ongoing international refugee and forced migration situation. In doing so, it rethinks the human capacity to care about the suffering of distant others. At a time when emotional resources are running low, there is a need to recast what it means to care, with the aim of generating a productive movement against the rise of val…
Reflections of a black woman practitioner-researcher
Poetry as a tool for research reflectivity is used in this article to explore the individual and personal experience of a black woman researcher-practitioner, working and studying in two white male-dominated organisations—the British Prison Service and a university institution. The discussion will trace how she reconciled her multiple identities and how these identities shaped her perception of her gender-racial group, prison culture, and univers…
An Existential Ecofeminism and a Renewed Critical Theory of Nature
Simone de Beauvoir has been commonly criticized for separating women from nature and attempting to make women "like men", as beings that dominate nature. I defend Beauvoir's existential concept of freedom as a non-sovereign relationship with nature. I then use the existential model constructed from my defense of Beauvoir as a framework with which to critique and engage Jürgen Habermas' 2001 intervention against liberal eugenics. My critique of Ha…
The Affect of Dissident Language and Aesthetic Emancipation at the Margins
In this paper I focus on the interaction between affect and language as articulated in the works of Theodor W. Adorno and Julia Kristeva, sometimes in inchoate and non-explicit ways. Language is always in transit, exile, and dispossession. All language is the language of another, or the other, and precisely because of this, it is the site of dissenting and conflicting affect. In this context, my paper traces a missed but necessary dialogue betwee…
Heller's Either/Or
The question 'How does a person make an ethical decision?' becomes all the more compelling and problematic when trying to behave ethically during, as Ágnes Heller puts it, 'the total breakdown of "normal" ethical worlds'. In her philosophical work Heller pieces together a moral compass internal to individual subjectivity to employ during such times. Kierkegaard's model of existential choice has played a formative role in Heller's solution to the …

Bargaining Theory with Applications
The first unified and systematic treatment of the modern theory of bargaining, presented together with many examples of how that theory is applied in a variety of bargaining situations. Abhinay Muthoo provides a masterful synthesis of the fundamental results and insights obtained from the wide-ranging and diverse (game-theoretic) bargaining theory literature. Furthermore, he develops new analyses and results, especially on the relative impacts of…
Community Aids/HIV risk reduction
OBJECTIVES. It is critical to extend community-level acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevention efforts beyond education alone and to develop models that better encourage behavioral changes. Gay men in small cities are vulnerable to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection due to continued high rates of risk behavior. This research introduced an intervention that trained popular people to serve as behavioral change endorsers to peer…
