  • On Voice, Song, and Imagination

    John Sallis•ARTICLE•Research in Phenomenology•2026

The relation between voice, song and imagination is at the heart of the work of many composers. This essay examines this relation by stipulating first that the voice is a way in which one is given an awareness of oneself. Subsequently, it is shown how this form of self-awareness reaches a higher degree through the voices resounding in music and finds its most sublime form when it is transformed into song. Therefore, the work of composers, as is i…

  • Elementality and the Politics of Light

    Open Access•John Sallis•ARTICLE•Oxford Literary Review•2024

The essay begins by recalling the words of Homer that to live is to behold the light of the sun. For it is the ‘elementals’ of sky, sun, and light that give all things to mortal beings, including time itself, beginning with the daily alternation between day and night. But contemporary commercial and scientific projects threaten to change all this. Whether it be through the launching of tens of thousands of communication satellites to fill the nig…

  • Frames

    John Sallis•ARTICLE•Comparative and Continental…•2020

This essay explores the ways in which frames allow what lies within them to shine forth with exceptional brilliance. It deals, first of all, with the frames of paintings but then is devoted primarily to the kinds of frames that can enclose discourse. Detailed attention is given to the framing constituted by multiple, telescoping reports of a conversation or event. Such framing as it occurs in several Platonic dialogues is investigated in detail. …

  • Einbildungskraft

John Sallis, Daniela Vallega-Neu et al.•BOOK•Einbildungskraft•2010

  • Transfigurements

    John Sallis•BOOK•Transfigurements•2008

  • Transfigurements

    John Sallis•BOOK•Transfigurements•2008

Transfigurements develops a framework for thinking about art through innovative readings of some of the most important philosophical writing on the subject by Kant, Hegel, and Heidegger. Sallis exposes new layers in these texts and theories while also marking their limits. By doing so, his aim is to show that philosophy needs to attend to art directly. Consequently, Sallis also addresses a wide range of works of art, including paintings by Raphae…

  • The Verge of Philosophy

    John Sallis•BOOK•Verge of Philosophy•2007

Verge of Philosophy is both an exploration of the limits of philosophy and a memorial for John Sallis' longtime friend and interlocutor Jacques Derrida. The centerpiece of the book is an extended examination of three sites in Derrida's thought: his interpretation of Heidegger regarding the privileging of the question; his account of the Platonic figure of the good; and his interpretation of Plato's discourse on the crucial notion of the chora, th…

  • Crossings

John P Mccarthy, John Mccarthy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aesthetics and Art…•1992

Boldly contesting recent scholarship, argues that The Birth of Tragedy is a rethinking of art at the limit of metaphysics. His close reading focuses on the complexity of the Apollinian/Dionysian dyad and on the crossing of these basic art impulses in tragedy. Sallis effectively calls into question some commonly accepted and simplistic ideas about Nietzsche's early thinking and its debt to Schopenhauer, and proposes alternatives that are worth con…

    John Sallis•BOOK•The gathering of reason•1980

"This second edition of The Gathering of Reason expands on John Sallis's classic study of Kant's First Critique. This study examines the relation of imagination to reason and to human knowledge and action in general. Moving simultaneously at several different hermeneutical levels, Sallis carries out an interpretation of the Transcendental Dialectic of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Although, in contrast to the Analytic, the Dialectic seldom refe…
