  • I, You, We

    Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan•ARTICLE•Naharaim•2020

In the early decades of the twentieth century, the concept of community ( Gemeinschaft ) was associated with an ideal society or polity; a host of figures conceived of redemption as the creation and development of community. In this paper, I briefly discuss how this ideal was appropriated by Martin Buber and how genuine community came to mean, for him, a society organized in terms of a collection of I-Thou oriented relationships. I then consider …

  • The Second Person in Fichte and Levinas

Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal•2020

Levinas never engaged closely with Fichte’s work, but there are two places in the chapter “Substitution,” in Otherwise than Being (1974), where he mentions Fichte by name. The point that Levinas underscores in both of these passages is that the other’s encounter with the subject is not the outcome of the subject’s freedom; it is not posited by the subject, as Fichte has it, but is prior to any free activity. The aim of this paper is to deepen the…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Levinas

    Michael L Morgan•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Levinas•2019

Emmanuel Levinas (1906—1995) emerged as an influential philosophical voice in the final decades of the twentieth century, and his reputation has continued to flourish and increase in our own day. His central themes—the primacy of the ethical and the core of ethics as our responsibility to and for others—speak to readers from a host of disciplines and perspectives. However, his writings and thought are challenging and difficult. The Oxford Handboo…

  • Levinas, History, and Historiography

    Open Access•Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2019

In this book Anton Froeyman has provided us with a colorful and intriguing account of a Levinasian approach to historical inquiry and historical writing. In my discussion of his book I describe central features of his account and notice how he uses, to develop his view, recent developments in historiography-including the work of figures like Natalie Davis and Carlo Ginzburg, in philosophical thinking about history and historiography, and in vario…

  • The Cambridge Companion to Modern Jewish Philosophy

Open Access•Melissa L Morgan, Steven Nadler et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge companion to modern…•2007

Modern Jewish philosophy emerged in the seventeenth century, with the impact of the new science and modern philosophy on thinkers who were reflecting upon the nature of Judaism and Jewish life. This collection of essays examines the work of several of the most important of these figures, from the seventeenth to the late-twentieth centuries, and addresses themes central to the tradition of modern Jewish philosophy: language and revelation, autonom…

  • Beyond Auschwitz

    Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan•BOOK•Beyond Auschwitz•2001

Auschwitz is the center of the twentieth century, its dark core, yet, in the postwar years in America few intellectuals dared to come to grips with the horror and the suffering. Jewish theologians too were slow to respond until, in the turbulent years of the sixties and beyond, a small number of Jewish thinkers came to realize that the survival of Judaism and continued Jewish life require first and foremost confronting Auschwitz; looking into the…

  • Ancient Philosophy, Mystery, and Magic

Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•1997

Empedocles played a crucial role in the development of western culture; yet little is known or understood about this man, who lived in Sicily in the fifth-century BC. This is mainly becuase his teaching has been reconstructed by modern shcolars first and formost on the basis of Aristotle's hostile reports - producing a picture which is disconnected and lacking in depth. Using material never exploited before, Peter Kingsley presents the first full…

  • Philosophy in an Age of Pluralism

Open Access•Charles Taylor, Sir Isaiah Berlin et al.•BOOK•Philosophy in an Age of Pluralism•1994

This is the first comprehensive evaluation of Charles Taylor's work and a major contribution to leading questions in philosophy and the human sciences as they face an increasingly pluralistic age. Charles Taylor is one of the most influential contemporary moral and political philosophers: in an era of specialisation he is one of the few thinkers who has developed a comprehensive philosophy which speaks to the conditions of the modern world in a w…

  • Plato and Greek religion

    Open Access•Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan•CHAPTER•The Cambridge Companion To Plato•1992

Religion permeated life in classical Athens and in classical Greece generally. It is hardly surprising, then, that religious vocabulary - mention of gods, festivals, beliefs, and rites - also pervades Plato's dialogues. These dialogues reveal a man struggling to understand human life and how it ought to be lived, a man engaged in deep reflection about rational inquiry, the human roles in society and in the cosmos, and man's relationship to the di…

  • The Continuity Theory of Reality in Plato's Hippias Major

Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan•ARTICLE•Journal of the history of…•1983

The Continuity Theory of Reality in Plato's HippiasMajor MICHAEL L. MORGAN THE PRIMARY REASON that students of Plato have recently returned to the Hippias Major is to assess its role in Plato's philosophical development.' In the most important among recent treatments, John Malcolm argues for a kinship between the Hippias Major and Plato's middle Theory of Forms, while Paul Woodruff" defends the Hippias Major's neutrality on metaphysical questions…

    Melissa L Morgan, Michael L Morgan•ARTICLE•Phronesis•1984

At Phaedo 72e4-77a5 Socrates attempts to persuade Simmias that the human soul exists prior to its present physical incarnation. The passage and the difficulties it contains are justly famous. One of those difficulties, however, has not received sufficient attention, although it lies at the heart of the doctrine of recollection as Plato formulates it in the Phaedo and at the core of the anamnesis argument for the soul's prenatal existence. The dif…
