  • Uncanny Women and Angolan Unhomeliness

    Open Access•Phillip Rothwell•ARTICLE•Lusotopie•2023•References: 3

Women writers have contested the monolithic version of Angolan nationhood propagated by the MPLA during the struggle for independence and its aftermath. Often haunted by an instrumentalized form of “mother-ness”, the version of Angola fashioned by the New Man left little space for women’s agency or the recognition of their creative autonomy. This article’s central premise is that a range of women writers (exemplified by Ana Paula Tavares, Rosária…

    Open Access•Phillip Rothwell•ARTICLE•New West Indian Guide / Nieuwe…•2019

An ambitious study that seeks through a comparative approach to tease out various points of convergence between a variety of linguistic and cultural traditions, Postcolonial Archipelagos is framed along three principal theoretical axes: the archipelago, conviviality, and creolization.Kristian Van Haesendonck posits the archipelago as a space for conflict, a plea for impurity, and a metaphor for tolerance and resilience. For him, conviviality is pa…

    Open Access•Phillip Rothwell•ARTICLE•Portuguese Literary and Cultural…•2017

This article traces the loss of paternal meaning manifest in António Lobo Antunes's Explicação dos pássaros. It equates that loss to the sudden fall of the Salazar/Caetano regime and a rapid disavowal of Marxism. The protagonist's suicide is read not only as his only viable option when faced with a catastrophic collapse in meaning, but also as part of a spectacle in which the Portuguese axis of desire shifts away from the patriarchal Law of the F…

  • Unfinished Revolutions

Phillip Rothwell•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2012•Cited by: 1

In the introduction, I present the nine articles in the volume, teasing out their common threads and arguing that the unfinished nature of revolutions can best be assessed by focusing on what the revolutionary process has left out. I also argue that a feminist critique often implies reassessing the mutually exclusive binaries on which revolutions are grounded

The Portuguese have been deemed possess, through their language, a destiny reconhecer desconhecido. This implies a respect for the Other that gainsays any attempt reduce it a defining buffer for the Self. The cultural outputs of post-independence Brazil and Africa, and the critiques that they triggered, reveal the impediments the fulfillment of this project. • The phylomorphic linguistic tradition

    Phillip Rothwell•ARTICLE•Hispanic Research Journal•2001

This article considers the tension which is perceived to exist in some quarters between the Portuguese and English languages. In particular, the linguistic threats assumed to loom over lusophone Mozambique are related to a historico-mythic discourse partly grounded but also symbolized in the Ultimatum Crisis. Additionally, recent changes to language policy within Mozambique are discussed in order to highlight and explain a propensity among some l…
