Phenomenology and cognitive linguistics in dialogue
The present study pursues three objectives. First, to expose and discuss the contributions of the philosopher José Ortega y Gasset to the phenomenological study of gestures and emotive gesture. Secondly, to critically review one of the central theses defended by Ortega, according to which “every expressive phenomenon”—including, therefore, the emotive gesture—involves “a transposition, that is to say, an essential metaphor.” This thesis invites u…
Null and overt se constructions in Brazilian Portuguese and the network of se constructions
Middle voice (MV) comprises a set of marked constructions associated with situation types (Kemmer 1993. The middle voice . Amsterdam: John Benjamins), in which the middle marker functions as an intransitivizer. MV constructions in Portuguese are se constructions in which the clitic se is typically overt, but in Brazilian Portuguese there is variation between constructions with and without the clitic marker. The overt-null variation is observed in…
Polarising metaphors in the Venezuelan Presidential Crisis
The 23rd of January 2019 marked the beginning of the Venezuelan Presidential Crisis, a unique socio-political conflict that confronted Nicolás Maduro, president of Venezuela, to the self-proclaimed leader Juan Guaidó. This paper explores the divisive power of conceptual metaphors in this context through the analysis of polarising metaphors, namely, metaphors that conceptualise ‘Us’ positively and/or ‘Them’ negatively. More specifically, from a co…

Exploring the productivity and systematicity of Recipient passives in Mozambican Portuguese
This study aims to explore and provide a detailed description of the construction known as “Dative passives” or Recipient passives in the Mozambican variety of Portuguese, in the framework of Cognitive Grammar (LANGACKER, 1991, 2008) and Construction Grammar (GOLDBERG, 1995, 2006). Particular attention will be paid to the complex semantic categories of passive and ditransitive structures in order to identify which of their conceptual aspects lay …
O Conto, (Em)cantos Da Escola
Null se constructions in Brazilian and European Portuguese
Se constructions designate a set of polysemous constructions along a transitivity continuum marked by the clitic se that perform various functions: reflexive/reciprocal, middle, anticausative, passive, and impersonal. A counterpart of these constructions without the clitic – the null se construction – is also attested. Based on an extensive usage-feature and profile-based analysis, and using multivariate statistical methods, we analyze, consideri…
Complexity, variation and meaning
The complexity of the linguistic system, the variability of meaning and the interindividuality of human cognition are intimately related. By examining language in its effective usage, we cannot help but recognize its great variability and heterogeneity, and one must correlate social variation with conceptual variation. When investigating the variability of meaning, one cannot neglect sociolinguistic variation as one of the factors of this variabi…
Pluricentricity
The "one-nation-one-language" assumption is as unrealistic as the well-known Chomskyan ideal of a homogeneous speech community. Linguistic pluricentricity is a common and widespread phenomenon; it can be understood as either differing national standards or differing local norms. The nine studies collected in this volume explore the sociocultural, conceptual and structural dimensions of variation and change within pluricentric languages, with spec…
Stages of grammaticalization of causative verbs and constructions in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian
The article shows that analytic causative constructions are more grammaticalized in French and Italian than in Spanish and Portuguese, both in meaning (semantic bleaching of the verb 'to make') and in synthesis (structural event integration). It is pointed out, moreover, that Italian fare + infinitive is semantically and structurally more grammaticalized than French faire + infinitive, and that the emergence of the inflected infinitive in the cla…
