In January 1949, the Dutch Senate discussed the recent military offensive against the Indonesian Republic, which had been halted by Resolution 63 of the United Nations Security Council. Communist member Jan Haken quoted letters sent by Dutch conscripts. One case concerned an act of revenge for the death of two Dutch soldiers, when the company burned down the nearest kampung and ran domly shot at least ten local men. The soldier wrote, "If you tel…

    Open Access•Huw Bennett, Peter Romijn•ARTICLE•BMGN - Low Countries Historical…•2020

In this forum contribution Huw Bennett and Peter Romijn compare how British and Dutch authorities have dealt with reports on atrocities committed systematically by their own troops in the armed conflicts of decolonisation in Kenya and Indonesia, respectively. This comparison demonstrates the differences that existed in the Dutch and British dealing with and manipulation of information, the organisation of disinformation and the management of scan…

  • Transnational Identities of Dutch Nazi-Collaborators and their Struggle for Integration into the National Community

Open Access•Ismee Tames, Peter Romijn•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2018

Transnational Identities of Dutch Nazi-Collaborators and their Struggle for Integration into the National Community This article aims to shed light on how Nazi collaborators’ transnational encounters and exchanges generated attitudes and outlooks that are different and more diverse than those that one would be able to find when focusing solely on the issue of reintegration from the perspective of the nation-state framework. Military service in th…

  • Divided Dreamworlds

    Open Access•Giles Scott-Smith, Peter Romijn•BOOK•Divided Dreamworlds•2012

While the divide between capitalism and communism, embodied in the image of the Iron Curtain, seemed to be as wide and definitive as any cultural rift, Giles Scott-Smith, Joes Segal, and Peter Romijn have compiled a selection of essays on how culture contributed to the blurring of ideological boundaries between the East and the West. This important and diverse volume presents fascinating insights into the tensions, rivalries, and occasional coope…

  • Learning on ‘the job

    Peter Romijn•ARTICLE•Journal of Genocide Research•2012•Cited by: 1

This article discusses the recruitment and first deployment of Dutch ‘war volunteers’ as a part of the effort to restore colonial authority in Indonesia in the aftermath of the Second World War. The central issue is how these men, who had joined the armed resistance against the German occupier of the Netherlands, could now become involved in atrocities and violations of the rules of war. I will argue that answers may be found in the way in which …

  • Historical Justice in International Perspective

    Peter Romijn•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2010•Cited by: 7

For historians, ‘the Wrongs of the Past’ are natural products of the course of history and ‘Historical Justice’ remains an elusive concept. Categories such as right and wrong are discussed publicly from moral, religious, and political platforms; but, even when dealing with the aftermath of dictatorship, atrocities and mass violence, historians may feel hampered from a professional point of view in using such ideas as standards of judgement. At th…

  • Kriegserfahrung und nationale Identitat in Europa nach 1945

    Peter Romijn•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2010

In 2010 Europe commemorates the fact that 65 years ago the Second World War came to an end. Celebrations show that the memory of the war is still a strong influence in defining national identity and citizenship in today's Western World. Owing to the natural limitations to human life, however, the experience of the war is rapidly becoming a transferred one. In most cases it is now discussed by those who do not share it from their own experience. T…
