  • The Barcelona Urban Elite, 1808–1899

    Open Access•Angel Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern European History•2018

This article focuses on the relationship between classical liberal ideology and the Barcelona urban elite between 1808 and 1899. For many historians this question would not be seen as problematic. «Bourgeois» elites are often described as liberals and «bourgeois» and «liberal» culture elided. However, in the Catalan case matters were not so straight forward. While Barcelona big business and wealthy professionals supported key liberal economic and…

  • The rise and fall of “respectable” Spanish liberalism, 1808–1923

    Open Access•Angel Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian & Latin…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The article focuses on the reasons behind both the consolidation of what I have termed “respectable” liberalism between the 1830s and the 1840s and its subsequent decline and fall between 1900 and 1923. In understanding both processes I study the links established between “respectable” liberals and propertied elites, the monarchy, and the Church. In the first phase these links served to consolidate the liberal polity. However, they also meant tha…

    Open Access•Angel Smith•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 1

This article focuses on the key role in Catalonia played in the genesis of the military coup by the captain general of Barcelona, Miguel Primo de Rivera, in September 1923. From 1917 the rise of labour agitation and the radicalization of Catalan nationalism precipitated the formation of a counter-revolutionary coalition between the armed forces and right-wing sectors of Catalan society. Along with the military, the coalition took in, on the one h…

  • Social Conflict and Trade-Union Organisation in the Catalan Cotton Textile Industry, 1890–1914

    Open Access•Angel Smith•ARTICLE•International Review of Social…•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The article deals with the development of Catalan cotton textile trade unionism between 1890 and 1914. It has been argued that, given the economic difficulties which faced the cotton textile industry, employers were anxious to cut labour costs and unwilling to negotiate with trade unions. Between 1889 and 1891, therefore, they launched an attack on trade-union organisation within the industry. In many rural areas they were able to impose their wi…
