Echoes of the Field
Qualitative fieldwork in emotionally charged and culturally complex settings presents unique methodological and ethical challenges, particularly for early-career researchers. This paper reflects on a focused ethnographic study of adolescent mothers in Pakistan, examining how emotional entanglement, insider outsider positionality, and repetition shaped the research process. Drawing on reflexive memos and field notes, the paper illustrates how part…
Motherhood and mental health of adolescent girls in low- and middle-income countries
Adolescence, a crucial transitional period, involves significant physical, cognitive, and psychosocial transformations. In Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), adolescent pregnancy is a significant public health concern, with an estimated 95% of the world’s adolescent births occurring in these settings. While extensive research has explored various facets of adolescent development, there remains a gap in understanding mental health challenge…
Factors affecting mental health of South Asian international university students studying in high-income countries
This scoping review aims to examine the extent and nature of evidence on factors influencing the mental health of South Asian international university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who are studying in high-income countries. Moreover, this review aims to identify any notable gaps within the current evidence base in this area. In this review, we followed the JBI methodology for scoping reviews, as outlined in the JBI Manual for …
A critical interpretive synthesis to reimagine caring for people with a chronic and persistent mental illness in palliative care
A collective narrative of care and complex mental illness
Caring is a fundamental concept in healthcare, yet it is fraught with challenges for people living with complex mental illnesses (CMI). Many scholars theorize relationality and interdependence in their definitions of care, however, there has paradoxically been a sustained failure to involve the testimonies and voices of the people who clinicians are connected to and have interdependent relationships with. Using the work of feminist ethics of care…

This knowledge is needed for developing strategies to address their needs, with the ultimate goal to improve older LGBTI adults’ health outcom…
Domestic Violence and Immigrant Women
Domestic violence (DV) experienced by immigrant women is a public health concern. In collaboration with a community agency, researchers undertook a retrospective review of 1,763 client files from 2006-2014. The three aims were to document the incidence of DV, service needs associated with DV, and identification of risk factors associated with DV in the extracted file data. About 41% reported DV and required multiple services. Separated and divorc…

Methodological Challenges Faced in Doing Research With Vulnerable Women
Methodological challenges of qualitative research involving people considered vulnerable are widely prevalent, for which many novice researchers are not well equipped or prepared for. This places great physical and emotional demands on the researchers. However, a discussion to bring to light the issues related to the researchers' experiences and practical concerns in the field remains largely invisible in the literature. This article presents the…
Conducting a Grounded Theory Study in a Language Other Than English
Translation can be a problem area for researchers conducting qualitative studies in languages other than English who intend to publish the results in an English-language journal. Analyzing the data is also complex when the research team consists of people from different language backgrounds. Translation must be considered as an issue in its own right to maintain the integrity of the research, especially in a grounded theory study. In this article…
