‘Will we be Coca-colonised?’
This article recounts the French communist poet Louis Aragon’s appeals, over a number of years, for a return to traditional French poetic forms, most notably the sonnet in alexandrines, with a view to finding literary forms that express nationalistic sentiment. His project was motivated above all by a communist focus on resisting foreign domination, in the first instance the direct domination of France by Germany during the Second World War, and,…
Context matters for primary health care access
These findings provide valuable insights for policy makers charged with improving access arrangements in PHC services. A financially sustainable service underpins attempts to improve access that meets the needs of the service population. Smaller services may lack infrastructure and capacity, suggesting there may be a minimum size for enhancing access. Access arrangements may be facilitated by aligning the objectives between PHC, LHN and other sta…

Factors shaping parent–adolescent communication about sexuality in urban China
Within a rapidly changing cultural and socio-economic context, young people in China are increasingly engaging in romantic experiences and sexual behaviours with consequences such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Are nurses well placed as care co-ordinators in primary care and what is needed to develop their role
Care co-ordination is reported to be an effective component of chronic disease (CD) management within primary care. While nurses often perform this role, it has not been reported if they or other disciplines are best placed to take on this role, and whether the discipline of the co-ordinator has any impact on clinical and health service outcomes. We conducted a rapid review of previous systematic reviews from 2006 to 2013 to answer these question…

How is Primary Health Care conceptualised in nursing in Australia? A review of the literature
Australia, in common with many other countries, is expanding the role of Primary Health Care (PHC) to manage the growing burden of chronic disease and prevent hospitalisation. Australia's First National Primary Health Care Strategy released in 2010 places general practice at the centre of care delivery, reflecting a constitutional division of labour in which the Commonwealth government's primary means of affecting care delivery in this sector is …
Older persons mental health in rural Australia
There is significant unmet need for mental health care for older persons in Australia, with those living in rural communities particularly disadvantaged in terms of availability and access to services. Linkages and collaboration between health and social services has been advocated in national policies, though integrated primary mental health care for older people in the Australian context remains problematic
Operationalising integration in a new Australian primary health care centre
Background: New primary health care centres are being established across Australia by the national and state governments with an emphasis of co-locating General Practice and other primary health care services. The intent of the Centres is to overcome the historical division between these services thereby leading to more integrated health care, particularly for those patients with a chronic illness. It is not clear in policy what level of integrat…

Collaboration and local networks for rural and remote primary mental healthcare in South Australia
This paper draws on a consultation with 200 stakeholders about a mental health plan in the most remote region of South Australia to discuss primary mental healthcare improvement strategies. In rural and remote environments, a lack of services means that it is more difficult to deal with a mental illness or provide assistance for circumstantial life problems. The authors' consultations revealed difficulties with service access, acceptability and t…
