Methodological approaches at PhD and skills sought for research posts in academia
There is a concern in the UK about a lack of research methods skills among social researchers, especially in relation to quantitative methods. This article draws on findings of a study exploring the training needs of social scientists across the lifespan in the UK and focuses on the research training needs identified by PhD students and the research skills sought by academic employers. The data reported comprises a survey of PhD students, a surve…
The ‘international dimension’ in social work education
As our awareness of the impact of globalising trends has increased, so too has social work's interest in international issues grown. At the same time, concerns have been raised about what constitutes international social work, and how this ‘international dimension’ might be introduced to social work students as part of their preparation for practice. This paper reports on a recently completed study which explored the different ways in which inter…

A Case Study of Knowledge Management in Multiagency Consumer-Informed `Communities of Practice
We report a study that facilitated and evaluated two multiagency Communities of Practice (CoPs) working on improving specific aspects of health and social services for older people, and analysed how they processed and applied knowledge in formulating their views. Data collection included observing and tape-recording the CoPs, interviewing participants and reviewing documents they generated and used. All these sources were analysed to identify kno…
Appraising the Evidence
The authors describe a method of systematically reviewing research from different paradigms. They draw on the methods adapted, developed, and designed during a study concerned with the delivery of care across professional boundaries. Informed by the established method of systematic review, the authors undertook the review in distinct stages. They describe the methods developed for each stage and outline the difficulties encountered, the solutions…
Goal negotiation with older people in three day care settings
Drawing on a wider study of effectiveness in three models of day care, this paper explores the process and outcome of goal negotiation with older people in a day hospital, an outreach service and a day centre. Using qualitative data from interviews with day care attenders and focus groups with service providers, differing perspectives on goal setting and achievement are presented. It concludes with a brief discussion of this approach in the wider…
Understanding Social Research
In 1991 the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) published "Postgraduate Training Guidelines". Throughout the document emphasis is placed on the need for universities to make postgraduate research students aware of the methodological issues that affect their work. This text explores the relationship between knowledge, methodology and research practice across the broad spectrum of the social sciences in language that is accessible to resear…
