A Model for Student Success
Background: Institutions may be experiencing an increasing number of applicants who are underprepared for nursing study, especially institutions with access missions. Early identification and intervention can mitigate risk of attrition and unsuccessful NCLEX-RN ® outcomes. Method: An initial study of approximately 1,500 graduates from a multi-campus system led to the development of a comprehensive approach to student success. The model includes i…
Ethical and practical considerations in HIV drug trial closure
There is a gap in evidence regarding how research trial closure processes are managed to ensure continuity of HIV care for HIV positive participants following trial closure within low income settings. This research aimed to establish how research staff in Uganda understood and practised post-trial care for HIV positive trial participants. A grounded theory study was conducted using in-depth individual interviews and focus group discussions with 2…

What do we know about the application of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) in healthcare practice regarding decision-making for frail and older people? A systematic literature review
Older people as co-researchers
In recent years there has been a distinguishable trend towards user involvement in ageing research. Researchers and policy makers both are increasingly convinced that user involvement is necessary to adapt research questions and methods to meet the needs of older people. Little is known, however, about the quality of collaborations between older people and researchers. This study systematically evaluates a collaboration undertaken between two aca…
Exploring patients' experience of receiving information about cancer
Patient information is widely regarded both as a resource and an entitlement: a means of 'empowering' patients to behave as 'consumers' of health care. Patient 'satisfaction' has come to be regarded as an important outcome of care. This article presents qualitative interview data regarding the experience of patient information provision and the results of a self-completed Information Satisfaction Questionnaire (ISQ) among patients and relatives a…
Improving Work Environment Perceptions for Nurses Employed in a Rural Setting
Context: Effective recruitment and retention of professional nurses is a survival strategy for health care facilities, especially in rural areas. Purpose: This study examines the use of the Individual Workload Perception Scale to measure nurse satisfaction by a small rural hospital in order to make positive changes in the work environment for nurses. Methods: Baseline work environment perceptions of nurses employed in a rural Kentucky hospital we…
Evaluating the impact of a cancer supportive care project in the community
Advances in cancer care and treatment have created a new and somewhat anomalous category of patients with a diagnosis of non-curative disease who still have a considerable period of life remaining. During much of this time they may remain relatively well, without manifest need for clinical care. The responses of patients to this challenging situation are largely unknown. However, it has been assumed that because they confront a difficult experien…

Interaction Effects in Mixed-Member Electoral Systems
The past decade has witnessed a surprising growth in the popularity of mixed-member electoral systems. Under these systems, voters choose representatives simultaneously under both proportional representation (PR) and single-member district plurality (SMDP) rules. It is widely accepted that SMDP rules tend to winnow competition down toward two large parties, and evidence from mixed systems suggests that this Duvergerian “gravity” reduces the numbe…

Evaluation of a project providing community palliative care support to nursing homes
This paper reports an evaluation of a 3-year pilot community care project to extend 'hospice standards' of palliative care to nursing home residents in Nottingham. The evaluation involved two questionnaire surveys of all matrons of nursing homes with registered palliative care beds (39 and 43 matrons, respectively) and 35 interviews with a sample of local stakeholders selected to give a range of views regarding the project's impact. The interview…
