Grammatical complexity in spoken English: Towards a definition of a specific oral proficiency of teachers of English as a foreign language
Considering the historical context of unsatisfactory conditions in the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Brazil (Consolo, 2017), this work aims at collaborating with the analytical criteria for assessing grammar in an oral test from an examination that evaluates EFL teachers’ proficiency. Since the progress of a foreign language learner can be observed by the grammatical forms that s/he manages to produce the language adequately …
Coerced inflected infinitives in Portuguese
In configurations where inflected and uninflected infinitives may alternate in Portuguese, the option without overt agreement may be incompatible with adjectival predicates, passivized verbs, or reflexive clitics and is subject to a puzzling dialectal variation among speakers. This paper argues that the infinitival form without agreement may be analyzed by speakers as involving a T head with no φ-features, a T head with just a number feature, or …
Pandemic effect on company’s sustainability debt policy: The case of Portugal
Amid the relentless grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, sustainability has emerged as a paramount concern across global economies. As businesses grapple with unprecedented challenges, the imperative for sustainable practices in corporate finance becomes increasingly evident. Throughout this crisis, companies have faced staggering financial strains, with diminished turnovers and escalating operational costs pushing many to the brink of collapse. In res…

Metalinguistic Negation
This chapter introduces the reader to the concept of ‘metalinguistic negation’ as defined by Horn (1989), the extensive bibliography on the topic, and the main issues it considers and debates. Besides the pragmatic and semantic matters that have been at the heart of the literature’s discussions, the chapter also considers syntactic aspects of metalinguistic negation, extending the focus from not-sentences to a broader coverage of the ways metalin…
Some notes on postverbal subjects in declarative (and other non-wh-) sentences
This paper discusses the syntactic and interpretative properties of sentences with immediately postverbal subjects (i.e. VSX constituent order) in European Portuguese. Two types of VSX word order are described and analyzed within the generative framework. One type in which, according to the proposed analysis, the verb and the postverbal subject stay inside the IP space and one type in which the verb or both the verb and the subject move to positi…
Identity Avoidance with Reflexive Clitics in European Portuguese and Minimalist Approaches to Control
In this article, we discuss two types of cooccurrence restrictions involving reflexive clitics in European Portuguese and examine their implications for obligatory control. We argue that these restrictions may shed some light on where the controller is generated, thus making it possible to empirically test three Minimalist approaches to control: the predicate attraction approach (see Manzini and Roussou 2000 ), the PRO-based approach (e.g., Choms…
