The use of algorithmic hiring is on the rise, becoming more and more common due to its capacity to process a large number of applications with efficiency. Despite the advantages of this approach, there have been numerous cases of discriminatory hiring outcomes. A significant contributing factor to such outcomes is the lack of representativeness in the data used to develop these systems. This results in a significant decline in performance for und…
Participant behavior and community response in online mental health communities
The growing presence of online mutual-help communities has significantly changed how people access and provide mental health (MH) support. While extensive research has explored self-disclosure and social support dynamics within these communities, less is known about users’ distinctive behavioral patterns, posting intents, and community response. This study analyzed a large-scale, five-year Reddit dataset of 67 MH-related subreddits, comprising ov…
Evolution over 62 years
Sexism against women remains an entrenched problem, manifested in contemporary cultural production worldwide. Since cultural production can be understood as both a mirror for and a reflection of the society where it is inserted, the persistence of sexism in music might rather represent how sexist our society is. The present work aims to analyze the evolution of sexism towards women among the most listened to music lyrics during the past six decad…

Exposure Inequality in People Recommender Systems
People recommender systems may affect the exposure that users receive in social networking platforms, influencing attention dynamics and potentially strengthening pre-existing inequalities that disproportionately affect certain groups. In this paper we introduce a model to simulate the feedback loop created by multiple rounds of interactions between users and a link recommender in a social network. This allows us to study the long-term consequenc…

The Response of Governments and Public Health Agencies to Covid-19 Pandemics on Social Media
During the COVID-19 pandemic, information is being rapidly shared by public health experts and researchers through social media platforms. Whilst government policies were disseminated and discussed, fake news and misinformation simultaneously created a corresponding wave of “infodemics.” This study analyzed the discourse on Twitter in several languages, investigating the reactions to government and public health agency social media accounts that …
Ranking and grouping social media requests for emergency services using serviceability model
Social media has become an alternative communication mechanism for the public to reach out to emergency services during time-sensitive events. However, the information overload of social media experienced by these services, coupled with their limited human resources, challenges them to timely identify, prioritize, and organize critical requests for help. In this paper, we first present a formal model of serviceability calledSocial-EOC, which desc…
Social Data
Social data in digital form, including user-generated content, expressed or implicit relations between people, and behavioral traces, are at the core of popular applications and platforms, driving the research agenda of many researchers. The promises of social data are many, including understanding ``what the world thinks'' about a social issue, brand, celebrity, or other entity, as well as enabling better decision-making in a variety of fields i…
Processing Social Media Messages in Mass Emergency
Social media platforms provide active communication channels during mass convergence and emergency events such as disasters caused by natural hazards. As a result, first responders, decision makers, and the public can use this information to gain insight into the situation as it unfolds. In particular, many social media messages communicated during emergencies convey timely, actionable information. Processing social media messages to obtain such …
Emergency-relief coordination on social media
Disaster affected communities are increasingly turning to social media for communication and coordination. This includes reports on needs (demands) and offers (supplies) of resources required during emergency situations. Identifying and matching such requests with potential responders can substantially accelerate emergency relief efforts. Current work of disaster management agencies is labor intensive, and there is substantial interest in automat…

Information credibility on twitter
We analyze the information credibility of news propagated through Twitter, a popular microblogging service. Previous research has shown that most of the messages posted on Twitter are truthful, but the service is also used to spread misinformation and false rumors, often unintentionally.
Twitter under crisis
In this article we explore the behavior of Twitter users under an emergency situation. In particular, we analyze the activity related to the 2010 earthquake in Chile and characterize Twitter in the hours and days following this disaster. Furthermore, we perform a preliminary study of certain social phenomenons, such as the dissemination of false rumors and confirmed news. We analyze how this information propagated through the Twitter network, wit…
Características de la Web de España
In September and October 2004, a massive harvesting of pages from the web of Spain was carried out. This effort permitted us to find over 16 million pages, on approximately 300,000 web sites, which have been analysed in terms of contents, connectivity and technologies. The analysis of the data reveals several statistical similarities with observations made about the characteristics of the web by other studies conducted on subsets of the global we…
