Kings’ Sagas (Konungasögur)
Morkinskinna: The Earliest Icelandic Chronicle of the Norwegian Kings (1030–1157)
Morkinskinna (rotten parchment), the first full-length chronicle of the kings of medieval Norway (1030-1157), forms the basis of the Icelandic chronicle tradition. Based ultimately on an original from ca. 1220, the single defective manuscript was written in Iceland ca. 1275. The present volume, the first translation of Morkinskinna in any language, makes this literary milestone available to a general readership, with introduction and commentary t…

From NDEA to Epda: Can We Improve
Though my first institute experience was only a short decade ago, it already seems a little unreal, not to say antique. The directors and staffs of those early institutes made perhaps the greatest efforts of anyone to rethink freshly the old problems. After our somewhat disconcerting language deficiencies were so dramatically revealed by World War II, and after the comprehensive six-year study by the Modern Language Association known as the Forei…

Spanish, Language of the Americas
I should like to explore together with you some of the meanings suggested by this title which has been assigned to me.* In what direction does the mind take off when the word Spanish is mentioned? We may think of Spanish as one of the international languages. With an estimated 150 million or more native speakers in Spain, North Africa, the Near East, the Philippines, and throughout Spanish America, it ranks fifth among the languages of the world.…

The Icelandic Family Saga: An Analytic Reading
Theodore Andersson presents the first formal analysis of the Icelandic family sagas. Isolating the structural and larger rhetorical features which are peculiar to the genre and set it apart from other narrative forms, his study relates these features to the older Germanic heroic poetry and demonstrates the continuity between this literary tradition and the sagas. The second part of his book is devoted to synopses and outlines of twenty-four famil…
